My opinion is to do what you said, clearn, minimal flourishing.  I'm sure receiving something beautiful that you put time into will be touching to him at this time.  It will show how heartfelt it is.

I had the same concern once, wanted to do calligraphy on family thank you's after a funeral, but didn't know if it was appropriate.  I went with an Italic so it wasn't too over the top fancy. A little more fancy would be nice for your personal note.

I have a question......My scanner has resolutions from 50 - 4,800 dpi.  If I scan at the highest setting (4,800 dpi) do you know how big of a print of lettering can be made before the lettering gets pixelated or distorted?

Are there any charts around saying 300 dpi goes up to 8 x 10 size or anything?

Curious if someone wanted to make a giant poster or banner how big they can print.

That's the other thing, I think you'd have to make it a PDF vs a JPG to go big right?

Thank you for responding Estefa.  That could be it, it may look fine once it's just in the small icon or I should just do something simpler.  When I Emailed it to myself at a "regular" size I could still see pixels, but that's still bigger than that tiny icon.  Or, like you say, it's just losing too much data that small.  Good to know that's just how it is.  Thank you ~

Letter Pixels / blurry lettering

Hello ~

Can anyone tell me why after I scan my lettering at 1600 and I try to reduce in Photoshop it gets pixelated?  I thought that only happened with enlarging.  I'm trying to make my lettering fit into the Instagram icon.  They want it to be 180 pixels by 180 pixels.

I tried copy, pasting and then transforming the lettering into the 180 square pixel box, but that's when it gets pixelated.  ??

Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a good (smooth) colored paper that takes calligraphy inks and gouache well.  I would love to find pads with different colors in it.

I see Paper & Ink has Murano pads.  Has anyone used these for original calligraphy work?

Hi Mark,

You need an acrylic ink.  Like Dr. Ph Martins Spectralite  https://www.paperinkarts.com/spectr.html  or Ziller https://www.paperinkarts.com/acrylic-ink.html

Acrylic is great for many of the tough surfaces and is waterproof when dry.

I've never tried this, but Fun Foam comes to mind.  It comes in sheets.  If you Google it it will come up.  They sell it at craft stores for kid's crafts.  It would give you the cushion surface and it may not slide as much as felt.  It's a kind of plastic I guess, don't really know what it's made of.

I think your smallest writing is excellent!  I don't have experience in this, but I've heard that the Brause 66EF is needle sharp, maybe one to try?
