Contemporary and Modern Calligraphy / Inspiration - "Hand to Type"
« on: December 12, 2013, 05:21:18 PM »
I am not sure if this is the right sub forum to post this, but as I wanted to try the picture upload again here it is: a little review of a wonderful book about contemporary calligraphy and lettering. I posted this also some time ago in another forum.

"Hand to Type" is an amazing book I aquired some weeks ago. It covers not only a lot of contemporary takes on calligraphy / lettering as well as script-style font design but also has some chapters about current developments in non-latin writing systems such as arabic, indian and japanese. Some of the examples are totally applied and practical, others completely free and more veering towards art.

There are some very insightful interviews with great typographers / calligraphers for example with Brody Neuenschwander (who did some famous movie projects with Peter Greenaway).

Apart from that it is a very beautiful book, a joy to browse in and a great source for inspiration!

Here are some more reviews –

Besides the book contains one of my favourite quotes about calligraphy: "The one hard thing about calligraphy is that is does take a hell of a lot of practice" - said mexican designer Mr. Gabriel Martínez Meave. So true!

I am very sorry the picture upload / linking from flickr didn't work. So if anyone is interested just have a look at some sample pages here:

Technical Support & Feedback / Right size for pictures?
« on: December 10, 2013, 07:02:54 AM »
Hi Erica,

I would like to know what format and size works best as attachment …? I tried different sizes of JPGs, 1200px wide, now down to 600, but still I get this mini-preview so that you have to click on the little attachment icon to see the full size picture. I see other pictures like that too, but also some you can see instantly … would be nice to know that!

Thank you very much, Stefanie

Introductions / Hello from (nearly) Berlin, Potsdam, Germany!
« on: November 23, 2013, 04:04:34 AM »
Hello everyone,

I am a graphic designer and illustrator with a growing interest in calligraphy, pointed pen mostly – I have been practising Copperplate and a bit Spencerian some time now and I am hooked! Thank you, Erica, for starting this forum – where I live there are not many calligraphers so I am delighted to find a place to share thoughts and informations!
