Title: Huion A4 Lightpad review
Post by: Faeleia on July 08, 2014, 10:05:01 AM
A review I promised @patweecia  . It's the same one Annie bought, but I thought I'll go into more details to make it a proper review:

I was pleasantly surprised when I first took it out. It's so incredibly light! And beautiful.. The workable areas are larger than the paper size.

Pros:
- Adjustable brightness levels, remembers last brightness setting
- Easy to use. One plug and it's ready to go.
- The USB head matches plenty of devices (non Apple). It works with my portable generic charger as well as my S3.
- Ruler guides. Useful for centering stuff. Although I haven't tried.
- Light, slim and portable. It's even thinner than your regular CD!
- Generates no heat whatsoever, ensuring prolonged use.
- Very bright. It can let you see through about 4 -5 100gsm papers, and 7 regular copy papers. (Note that it will not shine through dark papers)
(See image for comparison of its transparency through 70-80gsm copy paper and 100gsm ones vs coloured construction paper. Black is completely opaque, but I suspect any lightbox won't save you with this, because what colour guide could you possibly use to shine through black?)

Cons:
- The one touch brightness may be confusing, but once you get the hang of your favorite setting, there's really little need to fiddle with it.
- Perhaps slightly pricey, but if you compare prices with competitor lightboxes, it's a strong contender.
- Flat base, (with foam pads) but it doesn't have an incline. Should you require inclined angles, prop it up with something that won't shift around, like foam.
- Try not to stare into the light too long.. I tried to write copperplate, but apart from my not very good skills, my left eye was twitching up a storm.. and I rushed through the rest

Thanks for the review, Felicia. I wonder if it'll work for envelopes. Probably not, huh?

Light coloured envelopes, it works, but not if the inside has a dark coloured liner, or if it's black or dark navy..

I just ordered one earlier today, before I read this. I was worried you would give it a bad review.

Yay, I am glad you like it.

I am glad there isn't heat. My old one I would start sweating and then I would drink my tea. Yikes!

Just a heads up to everyone (if you're ordering from US Amazon). There are few variations of the A4 out there. The A4 I ordered was $69 and was stated to be the "BRIGHTEST" of the 17.7 line. 4800 Lux. I figured, brighter is better. But my only caveat is that it doesnt come with a MicroUSB plug like the other two versions, the LS4 and the LB4. It comes with a DC12V charger that is very short :( Also for whatever reason Huoin has two different listings for these lightpads on amazon, and on the two different listings prices vary by a few dollars and it looks like "what's included" varies depending on which amazon listing you choose.

I have a kindle cable that I was planning to use with it thats 5feet long, but alas no MicroUSB on the A4 version.

Basically the 17.7 Huion Lightpad lines rolls out as follows:

The A4 Model
$69
Brightness of 4800 Lux (The Brightest)
DC12V Charger that doesnt have a very long cable

The L4S
-$42
-Brightness of 1100 Lux
-Micro USB Charger (No wall adapter)
-Comes with some 5 sheets of tracing paper, and a Recycling Non-woven Bag.

The LB4
$84
-Brightness of 1500 Lux
-Micro USB Charger w/ wall Adapter
-*RECHARGEABLE* So you can charge it and it will hold a charge for 1.5 hours. Nice portability option.
-2 little Rubber ball stands to prop up the light pad at a slant.
-10 sheets of tracing paper, and a Recycling Non-woven Bag

So I guess there are pros and cons to each. The $84 LB4 sounds like the best deal since it comes with extra goodies and its rechargable. But the $69 A4 Lightpad is 3 times as bright but you just might have to order a longer adapter. I'll see how "Bright" this A4 is when I get home and let you know.

Hopes this helps anyone that was a little confused by all the variations like I was.

I just used my Huion A3. I love it. So light and I bought the 23.5" because of space and doing large 11"x14" + sized lettering. It's less than an inch thick too.

Only minus is the plug adaptor is like 3'. Oh well, it reaches my table ok.

Amy, doesn't the glare from the lightpad tire the eyes out? I find that if I'm working on smaller pieces, I have to cover the sides, or the reflected light will be too much for my eyes..

Loving the new lightpad too! Felicia, I have to cover up the sides as well when its cranked up because its is REALLY bright. I find myself adjusting the brightness so I'm not squinting from the light.

No, I guess I must have the lighting lower. I like that you can adjust the lightening. Super cool

Yeah I try to have it at the lowest setting possible and still enough to let me see the guidelines. Alexiz, I think the lightpad's design looks so fitting with your current cool looking workspace!

Thanks so much for this review Felicia!

I was almost convinced that I would have to buy one of the artograph lightboxes that are more than 100 dollars. This looks really nice and sleek, almost like a drawing tablet. I just ordered mine and now I can't wait to get Hugh Lightrey - yes, I named him already  :P :-[

I'm super happy everyone is enjoying this light pad as much as I am :D. I believe I have the L4S model.

I use it set at a fairly low brightness setting for practicing with guidelines and crank it all the way up for envelopes. I usually do cover up the exposed areas since the light hurts my eyes a bit.

I haven't found any issues with the relatively short usb cable that it comes with since my lightpad sits next to my laptop. I watch obscene amounts of netflix while practicing. :P

A question for those of you who've used this before - can it be used on thick watercolor paper? I'd like to write on some thick paper but really don't want to draw lines and erase them.

Yes, the light gets super bright. I can even see through some colored envelopes. I had 80lb paper and Bristol board with my copperplate grid paper and I could still see the lines.

I had a light box previously (a Light Tracer 2).  I was satisfied with it, as it met my basic needs.  However, I was doing invitations for a wedding & the only way I could see my lined insert inside the envelopes was if I lettered at the very top of the box, where the light is brightest.  That caused me to lean over the light box at a weird angle & it really hurt my neck.   :'(  For my birthday, I received a portable light pad and I'm totally in love!!!  It gets super bright (and it remembers how bright you like it, so that when you turn it on, it goes automatically to the last setting you had) and it is easy to see a guide sheet even through dark paper!  You need to treat yourself with one of these light pads!  Maybe Santa will get one for you if you are very good!

I just got my Huion light pad. It helps a lot with not having to rule lines for envelopes and thicker paper. Thanks Felicia and everyone else who recommended it. A question - do you use any padding under your guidelines to soften up the writing surface? If so, what do you use?

I guess you can use some padded sheets but it'll be harder to see the lines..

Sue,

I don't use anything under my guide sheet to pad it.  I write on the surface of the light pad.  You could pad it with something, but that would add another layer & it would make the surface darker.  That would make it harder to see the guide sheet & defeat the purpose of the light pad!  It is easy to write on the surface & I don't feel like I need any padding!

I use a paper towel under my guide sheet while practicing but for envelopes I use no padding

Thanks for all the reviews of the Huion. I am going to buy one for myself. I couldn't see myself plopping a $100 for a light box, but Huion is much cheaper. :) A question though, I'm undecided if I should get the one with the USB cable or not. Which is better?  :-\

it all depends on where you plan on using hte light pad. I work on my calligraphy at my computer desk so I have no troubles with the usb cable. I plug the usb cable into a usb outlet adapter( like the apple charging cubes)

If you practice at a dining room table or something with no nearby outlets I would choose the on without a usb cable

I bought one of these a few months ago.  Two points:
1. I also got a adapter outlet so I didn't need my computer.  It lightpad now has a slight waiver in intensity, I think from the outlet adapter.
2.  The lightpad comes wrapped in a light sheet of transparent foam.  Don't throw this out!  It makes a nice pad under your paper.

sharing my love for this lightpad.

okay, so after almost a month the lightpad arrived.  and i just love it!  no more tracing of lines.  and everything is written on a straight line.  i don't know why, but drawing guidelines has always been a problem even with a ruler haha.

oh, and the walnut ink is just love.  the effect while it's drying, and after it has dried is beautiful.  i don't why i never bought this earlier.

felicia i used a tracing paper for this. you can buy loose pages from art friend. they work well with the walnut ink.  plus, if you make a mistake, you can easily wipe it off; although it's not completely clean, but for practice it's okay.  and they're cheap too :)

I CAN NEVER GO BACK.  I can't even explain how wonderful it is!  The light is even and adjustable and clean, the surface is smooth, it works perfectly - I'm so happy!  I feel like I can finally produce the work I dream of instead of ruling everything up!

I have the A3 model.  It's so big! and so bright! Big enough that I can work on large projects as well as envelopes. :)  It came with a power outlet, not a USB (American, of course) but works fine with a converter on an Australian power supply.

I'm fairly new with calligraphy and I'm about to start doing some wedding envelopes and other projects, and I'm having trouble deciding which lightpad to get. I think I want the USB cord instead of the wall plug, but the ones with the USB have a lower brightness than the A4.

If anyone with the L4S or the LB4 models could let me know if they've ever had trouble with heavy envelopes or watercolor paper because of the lower brightness, or if those work fine for most projects, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

those thin sheets of styrofoam that are used for packing material make a nice cushion
under your paper or envelope
when you are working on any kind of light pad or light box.
they let most of the light through.

I got the Huion A4 Lightpad this summer and used it happily for about 2 months.  Then, I began to have problems with the connection between the cord & the unit.  The Lightpad would NOT take a charge & could not sense that it was connected to power.  I tried many different electrical outlets and USB combinations & nothing worked to turn the unit on.   :-[  I liked having the portability and the 3-stage settings for brightness.  I read at Amazon.com that others were experiencing the same problem with the connector.  I ended up sending it back and I instead purchased the Artograph 12-Inch by 17-Inch Light Pad Light Box.  It is more expensive and only has one setting (VERY BRIGHT).  However, it WORKS each & every time that I go to use it.  And, the Huion had an "Off" button that was below your right arm & you could inadvertently turn the device off (over and over and over again).  This unit's on/off switch is out of the way on the side of the unit.  I am very pleased with it and have been giving it very heavy use (I'm working on a large wedding project).  The light is so bright that I am even able to see my guide sheet clearly through the inner, lined envelopes!  (Of course, it helps that the bride chose ecru liners!  I don't know if I could see through a dark navy or deep gold liner!)  This' the first time that I have been able to see through a lined envelope & it has sure made my life a lot easier!

Reading through all of these reviews for the Huion and curious-- now that it's been a few months/year, has anyone else experienced the charging problems Janis described? How do you all feel about the location of the buttons? Would love some followup reviews now that you've all been able to use the light pad for quite some time. Thanks!

I'm also curious about the difference between this model:
http://www.amazon.com/Huion-Ultra-thin-ADJUSTABLE-Illumination-Lifetime/dp/B00J0UUHPO/ref=sr_1_3?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1418572843&sr=1-3&keywords=huion+light+pad

The size for the first is 17.72 inches and the second is listed as 17.7 inches. Price difference of just under $10. Can someone shed some light on these/tell me what I'm missing? There's got to be more of a difference here, I'm guessing.

My husband purchased from the seller on the first link you posted.  I'm slightly wary of the second link because there are some grammar/spelling errors.  I can verify that the first link gives you an excellent product, only because hubs is a wonderfully generous gift giver and let me have my light pad early.  I will say...he got it for $36.60.  I'd keep watching the price - apparently, it can vary greatly.  It's also interesting to me that one of the sellers is "Huion" and the other is "HUION."  I am suspicious of the HUION under link #2...do some investigating and make sure the seller is legit before you purchase - you could be getting a false product.

As for the light pad itself...the Huion L4S is great!  I'm completely obsessed and echo all of the positive reviews that have been posted to this thread.

Hope all goes well!

I was surprised with one of these L4S models under the tree yesterday (yayyyy!) and just wanted to let everyone know that it came with a little pamphlet describing all of the Huion models. While the Amazon pages can be confusing, it turns out the differences in size/accessories are easily understandable when you have pictures of all of them with the specifications of each! :) They should really publish thumbnails of this pamphlet on their product listing pages. Anyhow, if anyone has a particular Huion model in mind and want to know exactly what size it is and what it comes with, let me know!

For now, I think the most important distinctions are that the L4S and LB4 include a USB cord that must be plugged into a computer or a wall adapter for use, but the A4, A3, and A2 all come with a regular power adapter that plugs into the wall. I think most people have either a computer or a USB adapter, but if you don't you should know the LS4 and LB4 do not come with one. (Huion does sell a USB adapter on Amazon for around $12.) The LB4 also has a battery pack, which is why the outer dimensions of the pad are different than the L4S's but the active area is the same-- (see my question and links two posts up). They are all made by Huion, which is apparently a Chinese company per the info on the box and pamphlet, so that's probably why there are various grammatical/spelling errors in the listings.

All in all, seems like a great product and a good investment for anyone looking for a light pad!

Hi Megan,

Can you please let me know which lightpad is the brightest? I was trying to find out the brightness on the A2 & A3 models but it wasnt listed on Amazon. In the smaller models I think the A4 is the brightest.

Thanks in advance! :)

Afreen.

Hi Afreen-- sorry I didn't see your question sooner.

I can tell you what the pamphlet lists the voltage of each model as:

L4S: 5V
LB4: 5V
A4: 12V
A3: 12V
A2: 12V

Hope that helps!

Afreen,
I think the USB port is a 5v circuit, so they are restricted to that voltage, and the max current of the USB port.
The 12v units would give the designer more flexibility with the lighting design, so potentially, they could be brighter.  So I would go with the 12v units.

HUION L4S REVIEW  ;)
I have used the Huion L4S light box a few times now and really like it! It's so light and thin, I usually put it away in a desk drawer when I'm not using it. I plug it into the wall using an old cell phone charger that I no longer use for my cell phone. I  find that works best for me, though you can also plug it in to your computer/laptop etc for power. I really like that you can adjust the brightness, which is great and comes in handy with different papers. I give it 2 thumbs up.  ;) :)

Thinking about which A4 sized Huion pad I might consider - the info in this thread is great but just wondering what has stood the test of time, especially given some of the reviews I've read  :-\ I know this has been asked but just wondering if anyone could shed more light on the situation?

I don't quite understand what you mean by standing the test of time? Do you mean it in a daily life example? For me I don't use it as often as I should, because I lost my guide sheets, for one, and I always pack it away as I have a small desk, into its original packaging and box so it's really laziness of putting it away later that stops me from using it often, but otherwise, I don't think this product dies fast or anything like that?

Some of the reviews suggest the usb connection has broken easily or it has simply stopped working?
I wonder how much use I'd get out of it...  :-\

The USB connection on my A4 is pretty finicky.  I have to tape the cord to my desk so that the plug will stay at a certain angle.  I guess that's just the price you pay for the relatively low cost of this light pad.

Update: my Huion light pad passed away. It lasted 4 years. Have anyone else experienced this?

Sorry to hear that @AmyNeub - I've had mine for I think 4 years now and it's still going strong without any problems. I use it often, at least once to several times a week most weeks.

I don't have the USB version though, just the regular power adapter.

I purchased the A4, and absolutely love it! Thank you for this recommendation. It saved me tons of money, and is far better than I could have ever hoped for. I can't believe I have such a GREAT light box for well under $100!
