Show & Tell / Re: My very first hand-made pen holder!
« on: December 20, 2015, 08:26:43 PM »
OK, this isn't strictly calligraphy-related, but yesterday I went for a workshop conducted by a Singaporean calligrapher and pen holder maker, Dorothy, and made my first and very own oblique pen holder!

We didn't use wood lathes and instead used drills, sandpaper and knives to sand, carve and whittle it down to shape, but I'm in love with it so far! I made my flange to fit a Brause EF66, my current favourite nib. Dorothy is a huge believer in repurposing and upcycling used items, so the pen holder was made with broken drum sticks sawed down to length, and the colour of the pen holder came from rubbing coffee grounds onto the wood. We also rubbed in oil of lavender before applying the wood lacquer, so it has a very fresh and organic scent as well!

At Dorothy's suggestion, I marked out where my fingers rested on the holder and sanded down smooth grooves to make the holder even more ergonomic for my own use. I'm in love with this holder because it's so thoroughly mine! I would love to make more holders by myself when I have the time to go around gathering the tools and materials needed.

my goodness! this is so awesome! you have some talent there ;)

Welcome, Renee!

Do you have an instagram id or a website? Would love to view your works; you had me at "graphic designer"! :)

hi Camille, yes i do! (: i was actually trying to figure out how to include the link in my profile but anyways, you can search for @prinksdesign in instagram or view my works in facebook - https://www.facebook.com/prinks.design/

i have a lot more calligraphy works up lately so in terms of graphic work, i have those from my own personal portfolio of my previous works, but my facebook account is private though - so we have to be "friends" first before you can see it (:

Brush Calligraphy / Re: First Brush Project with Gouache!
« on: December 13, 2015, 07:42:13 PM »
This will be my first project on Brush Calligraphy and I'm loving it. I like how
my freehand looks like. Although I used Gouache here, it didn't seem to be one 😊
I will probably do this more often

really beautiful work!

Introductions / greetings from the sunny (& sometimes rainy) side!
« on: December 13, 2015, 07:29:16 PM »
hello from Singapore  :)

just joined the forum and thought i'd introduce myself a little. i originate from Singapore (born & bred here). i work as a graphic designer full-time & run a small business of my own. the calligraphy style i love is modern calligraphy and brush lettering. although truth be told, i love the art of calligraphy in itself!

i found calligraphy around 2years back & have been practising ever since. last year i took up a class for beginners and i loved it! been doing my own calligraphy practices & handlettering from then on. looking back at my past works, the difference between when i first started and now is really quite stark. but i know i still have a long way to go :D & that's why i joined this forum! to learn more from other calligraphers out there ;D

i mostly play around with markers & pens. haven't touched my nib in awhile! :-\*guilty* hoping to get some free time for myself to start playing with my nibs soon.

hope to share my works with you all!
