Angled uncial - progress
« on: February 17, 2016, 11:58:35 AM »
Hi all,

A quick quote from the last chapter in On The Origin Of Species:

Darwin quote, Uncial hand. by Robin Inkysloth, on Flickr

My progress is slow, but present. At least I'm not backsliding! All critique is welcome.

Thanks InkyFingers! Uniformity was the thing I was beginning to think I'd never achieve, when I got back into calligraphy a couple of years ago. I may not be a fast learner, but at least I'm getting there :)

Here's a decorated version of this quote, written out in walnut ink.

Hi Inkyfingers,

The process is straightforward:
write draft layout on practice paper to get spacing & layout
rule lines
write out final lettering
pencil in initial letter
apply size (this one uses Kolner Miniatum Ink)
let it set
breathe on it to activate
apply gold leaf
burnish
draw illustrations lightly in pencil - erase & redraw several times!
colour with watercolour.

No egg yolk required!

I made an alternative version, illustrated with sea creatures - I want to do more work with organisms not typically seen as attractive, hence including an angler fish here.

And! I've finally found a pre-made gilding size that I like - Roberson's Improved Body. Works a treat :)

I love it.  I also love that you're giving the less-attractive sea creatures the spotlight. ;)

Great pieces, both of them!
And way to go working through the process and trying different things.
