erica, i stumbled across this quote and video several years ago.  and it has been my mantra for just about every creative endeavor i've embarked on since then.  it is equal parts liberating, encouraging, and inspiring.  thanks for sharing it because i can always use some inspiration and encouragment.  :)

oh my goodness you guys.

    dear oblique pen holder...where have you been all my life.   ;D

like alot of you, i started out with a straight pen.  just got my new oblique holder today in the mail.  it works so well with the way i hold my hand and my pen.  my hairlines and connectors are so much nicer.  thanks for starting this conversation and for the motivation to try it!

hello my friends.

first i would like to thank you all so much again for sharing your tips and techniques.  as a newbie i am so grateful and i am learning so much from you all.

when it comes to learning something new, sometimes i get so impatient...i just want to be good now!  so frustrated by the learning curve.  but then i remember getting started with photography and how it took a while to figure out how to get what i saw with my mind's eye to come out of the camera.  but sooner or later things will 'click' {pun intended} and then it's just a matter of practice and refining. and truth be told, part of what i love about photography is that there is always something new to learn.  a new way of seeing things.

so that's what i've been trying to do regarding calligraphy...  where i got really frustrated before was in trying to run before i could walk.  so i watched all of the tutorials back to back.  practiced pages of each letter.  i was still unhappy with my letters because i kept snagging and the ink was bleeding.  not pretty.  then because my hand was hurting so bad, i just couldn't put as much pressure on the pen.  and finally. it 'clicked'...i was pressing too hard.  {insert hallelujah chorus here  ;)}

so here is finally a page of practice and a little project i created.  i know there is so much to improve on, but finally i think i'm starting to get the hang of it.  thank you again for all the inspiration. :)

Introductions / an okie here!
« on: January 26, 2014, 08:09:04 PM »
hello everyone.  just wanted to say hi and introduce myself.

my name is kelly and i live in tulsa oklahoma with my husband and our daughter who is currently a junior in college.  {don't ask me how that happened...i have no idea. ;)}

i am relatively new to the art of calligraphy although i have an sincere love of words and text.  as a photographer, i love adding beautiful text to my photographs.  so many times i have found myself pulling my hair out in photoshop trying to get my words to look just right.  i just sit there thinking, "if i could just write this myself it would be so much easier".  so that's what sort of led me into trying my hand at calligraphy.  although i am discovering calligraphy isn't exactly easy.  :)  but i love it.  i actually love practicing...it's sort of meditative if that makes any sense.

been a member here for a little over a week and have had a chance to read a few of the topics and practice a couple of the pointed pen lessons.  finally after a week of practice, i was able to produce a half-way decent alphabet...although to me it still looks like an 87 year-old woman who drank 12 cups of coffee made it.  ;)

anyway, thank you to erica and everyone here for so generously sharing your art and your knowledge.  looking forward to learning from you all.

blessings, kelly
