Tip for finger ouchies (for those of us with ninja grips)
« on: February 17, 2014, 04:43:09 AM »
Hi everyone!

I tend to press my fingers very hard against my pen holders and afterwards, my fingertips hurt. I don't know if wooden pen holders are better, I only have the cheap speedball one.

Well, I fixed myself a little something. I took this tape here: (I have no idea what it's called in English, it's a self-adhesive bandage), cut it in neat small stripes and wrapped them around my pen holder, right where my fingers touch it. Voilá, my own cushioned pen holder.

I just thought I'd share this, since I'm fairly certain I'm not the only finger-achy person here :)

It's called Coban.  It's a form of bandage that sticks to itself but you can reposition it a ton of times.  We used this stuff in the OR all the time.

I'd say that that's good for treating the symptoms, but you're not addressing the problem. Fixing your grip is not just good for ergonomic reasons, but it'll improve your calligraphy as well. Try to adopt a tripod hold, and keep your fingers as relaxed as possible... it's worth the effort learning it!

Of course I'm trying to adjust my grip so that I can ultimately get rid of the problem, but I might as well qork on it in a pain-free environment. I#ll still know when I'm holding too tightly, it just won't hurt.  ;D

This is a GREAT tip! I use the slightly cushioned oblique peerless holders and I still get a callous on my middle finger. And there is a permanent dent on that finger!  ;D

Great idea! I posted earlier about my hand hurting. We might have some of this already, I'm off to look...
