Pen lift with spencerian?
« on: March 19, 2020, 03:57:56 PM »
I’m aware there is a category for Spencerian, but because I am a total newbie drawing some letters to see if I want to pursue this further, I have a quick question. It appears the pen isn’t lifted as often as with Copperplate? I am working from Spencers’ New Standard Writing exemplar. Thank you so much!

Great question!

First, I am sure there are others that is more knowledgeable in this subject.  So please correct me if I am wrong.

Spencerian is a style of writing that is written swiftly and with minimum lifts.

A part of learning Spencerian, is to learn Business Penmanship (BP).  BP is written most swiftly and without lift.

Now...if one would execute BP or the more ornate form of BP (Spencerian) with maximum accuracy ... one would tend to lift many times more.  The more lifts, the more accurate the form.  This is not to say, accuracy cannot be achieved without lifts.

I think one would proceed in this course of manner BP, Spencerian, and then Ornate Penmanship.

Good Luck
