Broad Edge Pen Calligraphy / which hand next?
« on: May 06, 2017, 01:16:19 AM »
I'm kinda comfortable with my italic, enough to move on to another hand.
So now I'm looking at uncial or foundational.  Unless I find yet more hand to want to learn, which I probably will.

Which of the 2 would you recommend I learn next; uncial or foundational.
Or do you have other hands that you recommend me learning?

I went back to 2015 but could not find a similar thread.

I have been writing italic OK, but for 1 problem.
I cannot seem to do the horizontal stroke level.  It almost always tilts up or down.
This has been driving me batty with frustration.

Are there any tips or tricks in making the horizontal stroke level.

many thanks

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Confused on what class to take
« on: May 10, 2015, 03:16:01 AM »
I need some advice from those that know the subject, please.
At the SF Pen Show, Michael Sull is teaching 2 classes, American Penmanship and Spencerian.
I'm totally at a loss on which class to take, or even if I should be looking at Copperplate instead.
I was told that for the Spencerian class, we are to bring our own oblique holder, vs the American Penmanship class where I think we bring any pen.
I'm a novice novice, and all of my dip pen writing has been basically Palmer style, but using a Nikko G in an oblique holder, to get the flex in the downstroke.  So really nothing fancy, I just enjoy writing with a dip pen.

thanks

ps, I can't take both classes, as I have to run the registration table also.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Christmas/Holiday presents
« on: December 27, 2014, 10:26:37 PM »
I did not see a Christmas present thread, so I figure I would start one.

My wife gave me a "Daylight" light box (really a pad about 3/8 inch thick).   :)
She must have been reading my mind as I was really thinking about getting something easier to use than my current 4 inch thick light box.
Now I can use and see the guide sheets under my 32# paper.

Tools & Supplies / Cleaning nibs odd experience
« on: September 24, 2014, 02:16:38 AM »
I have begun to notice a rather odd thing with my Nikko G nib.
When I clean my nib with water between changing inks, the next ink has a hard time sticking to the nib, and I get very little ink to write with.  However when I give the nib a wipe with rubbing alcohol, the ink sticks.  This is with both Higgins Eternal and various fountain pen inks.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / New FLAX in San Mateo, Calif.
« on: June 29, 2014, 12:59:01 AM »
I just got a notice from FLAX.
They are opening a new store in San Mateo, Calif  in July.
San Mateo is about mid SF peninsula, think San Mateo bridge.
So now we don't have to drive into the city to get stuff from them.

General How To's & Projects / How to Use a Small Lightbox
« on: April 12, 2014, 11:58:32 AM »
I don't know if this should be a new thread or not.
But HOW do you use a light box.
What I mean is mine has an 11x12 flat surface, so my hand has a support, but not my forearm.
The way I learned to write was to lay my forearm on the table/desk and use the muscle under the forearm as a pivoting point.  Pushing and pulling to form the letters, but the weight of arm is supported by the forearm.
In my case, because of tendonitis, I cannot just let my arm hang in mid-air as I write, I have to support my arm.

Introductions / Hello from Northern Calif, SF Bay Area
« on: April 08, 2014, 09:59:23 PM »
I'm just getting into using dip pens.
I am looking forward to doing italic calligraphy using a cartridge calligraphy pen. I'm taking the easy way to start, then move over to a dip pen.

Right now I am trying to get a handle on using a dip pen for general writing, not calligraphy.  I've been using a straight holder, and have an oblique holder that I hope will arrive this week.  Man compared to a fountain pen, a dip pen is HARD to use, especially the pointed tip pens.  I can write and sign my name using an Eagle 830 bowl pen, but I CANNOT even write my name using any of my pointed pens.  The problem is controling the tip from scratching or digging into the paper.  Long learning curve ahead of me.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Dip Pen forum?
« on: April 08, 2014, 09:48:34 PM »
Does anyone know of a general dip pen forum?
Example, what I am currently interested is general writing with a dip pen, not calligraphy (yet) or ornamental writing.
I have been looking but this is the closest that I have been able to find, in that most everyone uses a dip pen do to their writing.

Thanks
