Oh yes - I love old ledgers and copy books! They're treasures to me. So you're not alone! ;)

I could also guess the meaning of the Afrikaans (because it has similarities to German), but spoken I guess it's much harder – at least it is so with Dutch :). I can also 'read' it a bit, but understand close to nothing (when spoken, I mean) …

You've got a point there, Stefanie - happened to us in Sweden! If we needed to figure something out from the spoken word, it was nearly impossible in the beginning. Once it was jotted down, the big 'Aha!' moment was most likely to follow ;)

Frohe Weihnacht!

What an interesting thread!

I had no idea that Afrikaans is so understandable! (if that term makes sense ;))

Like Estefa, I'm German but have lived in the U.S. since 2001. So English is my second nature. It's still crazy at our house these days language-wise, as our kids still blend happily some Swedish into our conversations, as we spent the past 3 years over in Sweden.

Happy Holidays, everyone!
Schöne Feiertage!
God Jul!

Thanks again, everyone!

Also: We better be careful or this thread will turn into 'Who likes/owns dal a horses and why?'  ;D

Oh yes, Gamla Stan, ericp. I loved strolling through the old streets and taking it all in. We had such a great time living in Sweden. Great memories! But it was time to come back here and we're glad about that as well.

Ha det bra! (everyone: do not read the third as English word!!!!!) ;)

Ohhhh, How awesome, Sharon! We just came back this Summer from living close to Stockholm for three years. My younger son loves Dalarna the most (we went there for skiing and apparently he enjoyed this a lot ;) he also fell in love with the dala horses). I'll forward you a picture of such a big one (I have to locate the pic first - please be patient ;))

Hejdå!

PS I love your dala horse avatar. I have several in my home including one that is about 18 inches high (it's huge!). I only wish I still had my straw goat as well!

Sharon, I love the dala horse(s), even before we moved to Sweden. When we lived there, I enjoyed seeing them regularly - in shops, in homes, and of course in Dalarna (in many towns as statue to greet visitors) :)

Hi everyone,

Those of you who use gum arabic regularly: Do you have a preference for a specific brand?

Thanks in advance!

Oh how nice to see this thread!
Even though I shouldn't be reading here but packing, I can't help to add two pictures of my very first 'family tree' (it's rather leafy twigs,  done for a friend) I'd like to develop this idea further but didn't take the time yet. There's so much to explore!
This particular friend didn't want dates except the 'established' year...

(Also - just to clarify: I used a font to layout the design to confirm everything before I actually wrote with nib and ink ;))

Introductions / Re: Watercolor and calligraphy
« on: April 16, 2015, 03:52:50 PM »
Hej Eric,

Welcome! :)

I love both - watercolor and calligraphy. Only at the moment it seems the painting with watercolors is getting way more attention than any calligraphy practice. I just go with he flow and I'm sure I'll be back at calligraphy practice eventually ;)
