Hello all, coming to this thread a bit late... I would love to practice via letter sharing. (As it turns out, I've decided to embark on an insane task of sending a handmade letter out every day. Only because email and texting can really wear you down sometimes, and there's nothing like connecting through old school postal mail!)
What is the best method to share my address? Apologies, I'm still getting to know how to use this forum...

A method that Michael Sull taught me was to gently run the nib up your thumb. If it starts to catch in your skin, then the metal has gone too sharp and is probably too scratchy for good use.
Just stumbling on to this very useful thread. Thanks for all the useful information!
I noticed that despite all my efforts at fastidiously cleaning my nibs that some are starting to rust a bit. Does that mean I should toss them? Or is their some way to extend their lives a little bit longer? I feel like I haven't been using them that much.
Also, I read somewhere that putting a new nib in flame helps "break it in". Is that true? And do you all do this practice?

Hi Nicole,
I'm new here too, and still acquainting myself to calligraphy after doing it on and off over the years. I understand what you mean about feeling frustrated by the practice, especially when you hold yourself to a higher standard. But I feel that calligraphy practice is all about producing art by hand, and because it's done by hand, there will be imperfections and flaws. And to me, that is precisely what makes the work so special because it's not done by a computer or printer. We each add our own uniqueness to all the letters we make. It's a hard thing to do, but I say, embrace imperfection. Not only does it add character to what we do, it also makes us work even harder.
Let's do our best!

Hi all,
My name is Janice. I stumbled upon the forum (which was VERY useful) when I got my first wedding calligraphy job a few months back. Since then, I've been lurking, but decided it's time to come out of the shadows.
Ever since I was a child, I loved handwriting and was constantly changing my penmanship to whatever style appealed to me at the time. I dabbled with broad edge pen calligraphy in the past, but now I mostly do versions of Copperplate and Engrosser's script. I still consider myself a novice and am dedicated to practicing and learning more.
I love sending and receiving postal mail, so if anyone is interested in being pen pals, please feel free to message me. In particular, I'd be happy to do letter exchanges with fellow Filipino enthusiasts. (It's great to see how popular calligraphy is in the Philippines!)
