It looks like a Century Oblique Penholder to me. If that's the case yes it's a great holder. But it might be a cheap knock off. Even still might be a good holder. Maybe others have a better option

i received the book yesterday and read the whole thing. I have to say I enjoyed it myself. I can see where he compared engrossers and copperplate and Spencerian. I knew that he was off on that one, but I do like the styles in the book. Is it good for a beginner? no, but it's a nice book to have in my collection. It will be one of my favorite "copperplate" books. I have the usual books Shelia Waters book, Dr. V's ebook. The Zanerian manual (my fav.) and the Universal Penman.

Saron, cool you got to visit his studio. I have heard Pauls explanation on why he uses a straight holder. I have personally ask Hamid why he does and he told me. I have never personally heard of the other Lady I will have to look her up. But for me I do American Engrossers Script. The oblique holder is right for me so that's what I will stick too. In fact I just purchased a Russian made oblique holder. But I admire Paul and Hamid's straight holder work. Plus Paul will always be my favorite.

How ironic, this happen less than 20 minutes ago. I purchased some McCaffery's Penman's Ink (white) tonight at the John Neal pop up store. I was excited because I never can get my other whites to work very well. I wrote out A B C my name, my wife's name. Then my cat jumped on the table then off the table and there went the ink. The whole jar. I really liked it the whole minute it lasted. I love my cats more than anything but I think I am done with them being around my practice area. At least when I am using wet ink. I feel you!

My personal handwriting is awful. However when I am at work and jotting down notes, sometimes I try to write English round hand mixed into cursive with a pencil. I have had several people say that I have nice handwriting. I just say thank you, it has improves since studying calligraphy.

ahh cool Andrew thanks for posting this. All of this makes a strong case inside the cloud of wonder in my head. You would think after 2 years using the oblique I would not even think about it. But that's me I guess.

I'm loving the dose of calligraphy on my commute each day!Moyà, I'm late to the Periscope Party! I have an iPad. What app do I need to download for my iPad or iPhone??

I dont think there is an app for the ipad. Only iphone. However you can still download it on your IPAD. If you have not been able to find it, the trick is at the top it will say something like ipad only. You have to change that to iphone only and you will be able to see it. Then when you open it up you press the 2x button and the bottom right to make the screen larger

Thanks for all the answers. For me I think I produce better work with an oblique. However I just wanted to use a straight holder just because that is the way he teaches. But I see that everyone is different and what I go for is Zanerian Engrossing script anyway and I know The Zanerian manual says to use an oblique.
Also I do practice broad edge calligraphy. That's what I started with and still study.

I know a lot of you here have been watching Paul's scopes. The one he posted today about straight vs. oblique holders was very interesting. However I have been struggling with this every since I started pointed pen. When I started calligraphy I googled it and Paul's videos popped up and I immediately felt a connection. I have tried to use a straight holder and failed. I tried off on on ever since and failed. My tines will cross, the lines are not even. It scratches real bad. I know a lot of you are going to give your straight holders a go, but I am curious will you stick with them? or go back to the oblique? I have personally ask this question to IAMPETH and was told I use my oblique with everything except business handwriting and flourishing. Thoughts?

On the DVD Copperplate Lettering with Ron Tate he touches on this very subject. He said that Lupfer slanted his work about 64% if memory serves me correct. He said he did this so he could square off the letters without having to go back and retouch them.
