Hello! I'm Daphne from Manila, Philippines :)
« on: June 28, 2014, 04:41:37 AM »
I took a basic calligraphy class by La Bellas a couple of months back and I've been hooked ever since!!

I just finished Erica's worksheets and plan on doing another round. I really noticed the improvement so yay! But still lots of room to make it even better. My flourishes are awkward…oh, wait, correction: I am unable to flourish ;D but at least some people think my writing is pretty  :-*

Today's Saturday and it's a nice afternoon to spend on Flourish Forum, PaperInkArts, and John Neal  ;D ;D ;D Oh! And Instagram, of course! Where I get to see real calligraphy work!

Has there been a post on how to use gum arabic or how to tell when you need to mix certain inks with it or dilute with water? "A few drops" they say…is that like 2-3 drops in proportion to how many drops of ink? Sorry for the silly question  ::)

Hello Daphne!  Welcome to Flourish!

I wish I was in the Philippines, I swear - La Bellas just seem to have so much fun!

Don't worry too much about flourishing, it comes with practice :)

Hello! I'm from Manila too. You're so lucky to be able to join a calligraphy workshop. I'm planning to enroll in one too (before saving money and buying "basic" calligraphy materials).I'm new here too!  Welcome! :)
I'll speak in calligraphy while everybody talked in scribbles.

YES!

(because it would cost me about a quarter to fly to Manila of what it would cost to fly to the US, haha  ;))

hellooo daphne!  i like your handle...theotherfish  ;)

as for the gum arabic drops, 2-3 drops are fine for me when mixing :)  or sometimes, instead of dropping them onto the mixture, i dip my nib onto the gum arabic itself.

Thank you, patweecia! I started dipping the nib in gum arabic and found that the ink can even go on longer. How often do you dip in gum arabic--just once before writing or several times?

Hi daphne. I just dip the nib in the gum arabic once, wipe it off gently with a paper towel and then use the ink :)
