Chalkboard Signs

I would like to do some chalkboard signs.  Is chalk the best medium to use or is there a better option?  Also, I have heard people speak of a spray fixative to seal the writing.  What could be used?

If you do search of the word chalk in the box in the upper right corner you will find many helpful posts. Then search spray fixative for posts about that product. Lots of good info on both.
