Anyone tried a Falcon nib?
« on: March 01, 2014, 11:39:27 AM »
Has anyone tried Hunt #98 nibs?  They seem to be called Falcon nibs too because of their 2 piece structure that makes it look like a falcon's head.  If anyone has tried this, do you like this?  What kind of nib is this?  Flex, non-flex, easy to use, hard to use?  I googled and can't find much info.

Thanks in advance!!!

I have not! I look forward to seeing the responses. Thought this deserved its own topic so it's not overlooked.  ;)

Looks like the Hunt 98 Falcons are "stiff" according to an IAMPETH reference. It's good for monoline writing and not flexible for Copperplate or Spencerian.

Good to know!  The Falcon nibs look so cool though!

I haven't tried the Howard Hunt, but I have used the Esterbrook Falcons, and like those very much.  Yes, they are stiff, but hold a great deal of ink, and are responsive to my hand.   When looking at the Hunt on line, I suspect the two are not that different.

I actually just came across a few Esterbrook 048 Falcons and just got to test one out this morning. I'm not sure how different it is from the Hunt since I don't have one, but it's definitely on the stiff side - about as much as a Nikko G. It does give decent shade with pressure and would probably work for someone who has a heavy hand.

Linda - your writing is so pretty!  I didn't know Nikko G's were considered on the stiff side. I love Nikko G's.  I am learning that I am a bit heavy handed.  I tried out Brause 66EF flex nibs and I loved it, but did have a few instances where the ink splattered. Maybe I will give the Esterbrook Falcon 48 a try if I ever get a chance at them!   :)

Thanks again Linda!

I use my Falcon simply as a stub nib to do general writing.
Never tired to do anything ornamental with it.

I definitely think Nikko G is on the stiff side ,especially after using the the Leonardt principle

I  have a box of Falcon Spencerian nibs (better ID at  home).  I like them because they are not so pointy as the other flex nibs, and so good for general writing on suboptimal paper.  Maybe the fines are not as fine as they could be, but the line is smoother.
