It looks like a Century Oblique Penholder to me. If that's the case yes it's a great holder. But it might be a cheap knock off. Even still might be a good holder. Maybe others have a better option

It looks quite serviceable to me. The flange might be sticking out a bit too much though. I wrote to them asking if the flange could be removed (as in Zanerian style) and they said that it could indeed be removed.

I think at this price it is worth a try. The flange can easily be fixed even if it doesn't work well out of the box.

I have an opinion and I'm not afraid to use it.

Well i just ordered one  ;) I'm a leftie but i realized some "seasoned" left-handed calligraphers prefer right obliques, i thought i'd give it a try and choose an unexpensive one!

Depending on the angle of the flange slot, you may be able to turn it into a lefty. If the slot is straight, (some have a slight upward cant), you could make your own lefty flange. As far as I know, the only difference is the angle that the brass flange is cut to.

Chris Yoke has an excellent video on making a flange.

I will like to see how left hand person use the left oblique holder.  Will that configuration not direct the point to reverse slant and instead of letters slanting toward right, they need to be slanted toward left.  Even for the left hand person, I will think the logical choice is right obliques, just the thumb is opposite to the flange.  Or maybe I am making things complicated.

Thank you.

I think it is good for those just starting out and want to "experiment" with an oblique holder.
My first oblique was the Peerless oblique, which at $13 is similar in price, but not as nice looking as a wood holder.

@garyn Yes, that's exactly why i don't want to indulge in a beautiful and expensive oblique right now ☺

@darrin Thanks for the tip, i'll keep it in mind. I will check Chris' video and see if i understand what to do and how ☺

@Tanvir I'm not sure how to use a left oblique either (but i'm an underwriter). I'll let you know if i manage to use a right oblique.

Valerie, I though you lefties did not have to use an oblique holder, unlike us righties.

At that price, I gave in and just ordered one.
Delivery is slow.  Looks like about 3 weeks.

BTW, I found this, an oblique pencil holder.

@grayn That's true, and for once i was happy not to be "penalized" for living in a right-handed world ☺ But then i saw a few very talented left-handed calligraphers, John DeCollibus to start with, using a right oblique so i tought i'd give it a try!

Those are the same ones sold by PIA and John Neal. They are made in China and imported, the manufacturer is selling them direct to the public on eBay and for less money. Typically a no-no for a manufacturer to do that to your own distributor.

Yes Chris, that would tick off their distributors and sellers.

Although not being to PIA for a while, I did not know their prices, and their new obliques.  The last time I looked, the Century Oblique was the cheapest wood oblique at about $22.
The eBay price + shipping ($13.80) comes out to about $1 less than the posted price on PIA ($14.95).  So if you are buying a bunch of other stuff, you hardly saved anything on the holder.  And you would get it much faster with domestic shipping from PIA or JNB.

I thought the PIA obliques (and possibly the J. Neal offerings) were made by William Schmidt of Turn of the Century.  They look very similar.
