problem with horizontal stroke in italic

I went back to 2015 but could not find a similar thread.

I have been writing italic OK, but for 1 problem.
I cannot seem to do the horizontal stroke level.  It almost always tilts up or down.   
This has been driving me batty with frustration. 

Are there any tips or tricks in making the horizontal stroke level.

It would help if you show us some samples of your writing and the writing instrument.

Generally when you use a broad edged nib for italic, a formal italic nib, very sharp, if your hand is not consistence with the paper, (that is not all the edge touches the paper with even pressure) you riding more on one side than the other, would cause a change in direction.  Much like a motorcyclist leaning on the bike to make it turn.

I'm using a Parker Vector italic pen.
I had been using a Sheaffer italic, but the grip felt too fat for me, so I switched to the slimmer Vector.  The corners of the nib are NOT sharp like a true italic nib.

But you gave me something to pay attention to.  I "thought" I had been holding the pen level, but as I do the different strokes I might not be level on the horizontal stroke.  Thanks.

When using a broad edge pen, try manuscript.  The grip size is smaller than the Sheaffer nonsense. 

What size of nib are you using?  For me, use the biggest nib 2.0mm first.  When one is comfortable at noticing all-edge-on, you can then downgrade to a smaller nib (1.5, 1.0, 0.7mm).

Use the lightest grip to produce the writing.  The lightest grip will allow for longer writing session, and the ability to write with any sized pen.

I think the nib size is about 1.1mm.
I use it to write the date in my notebook/journal, before I switch to a fountain pen, so not a lot of writing.

Maybe I need to go back to 1st grade and practice with a WIDER nib.  I think my widest nib is about 2mm.

Have you tried these exercises?  Sorry about the shaky drawing.  Practicing on the Boeing 777 is not ideal but not as bad as on a Boeing 747 (more turbulence.)
