as a few has pointed out, the book by Eleanor Winters is not in the same classic style taught at the Zanerian College.  I prefer the Zanerian way, specifically, EA Lupfer's (to be _really_ specific..since there's a bit of variation among the Zanerian-era masters).

Not sure if it's mentioned here yet...but you don't need to buy the Zanerian Manual (TBH the reprints being sold online are serviceable at best), you can download it here free of charge (thanks to the kindness of David Grimes aka @Masgrimes) for the purpose of learning copperplate--i.e., not to be reposted somewhere else and definitely not to be sold.

What I mean: the many gaps I see often on Engrosser's script were, if I understand the quote above correctly, not meant to look like that. The script also should look like written continuously.

I admit that there are some calligraphers who manage to make the gaps a pretty (and probably very deliberate) detail in their overall script – but in many cases, to my eyes, it just looks disruptive.

i think that's the key: the pen lifts are probably irrelevant _as long as one cannot tell that pen lifts were actually applied_--i.e., no gaps

from the EA Lupfer Compilation by Dr. Vitolo http://www.zanerian.com/LupferEAScriptInsights.pdf on page 2: "The pen should be raised each time on turns on the baseline.  We have intentionally shown these breaks in the copy.  In skillful work the breaks are concealed."

It was made in England.  Here is a picture.  I don't have the box.  They came in today and they write like a dream.  :-)

oh i bought a dozen of these on eBay because it was relatively cheap...i received them and it's noticeably larger than the other usual suspects...i figure i'd try it at a later time when i'm bored :)

so far i found the Blanzy #2552 the best...smooth, flexible, and *durable*.  the B&F Velleda 436EF comes close, but a bit scratchier.

yes, i intend to use them (in fact, i'm using some of them now)...although i admit for some i will use them very sparingly especially the Principality and 604EF...the Cementée i can use more since i have enough supply to last me for a while (probably).

as for paying at these prices.  my wallet says "no."  let's put it that way...ask me again in a year. :)  (denial phase initiated)

My vintage nibs all acquired through eBay this month (January 2017):

january 2017
  • Gillott's Principality #1 - USD 10.50 each (4 pcs) - yes, $10.50 not a typo...i got lucky on a listing very few bidders noticed :)
  • Gillott's 303 - USD 4.99 each (10 pcs)
  • Gillott's 170 - USD 2.99 each (10 pcs)
  • Gillott's 604EF - USD 13.61 each (9 pcs)
  • Esterbrook 357 - USD 5.00 each (12 pcs)
  • Hunt 103 - USD 32.99 gross
  • Blanzy-Conte-Gilbert Cementée 2552 - USD 60.00 gross
@bubuli
I'm curious. Do you intend to use these nibs?
Will you be looking to buy more of these at these prices?

hi my name is Dexter.  originally from the Philippines, moved to NJ in '96.

i've been doing broad pen as a hobby on-and-off since high school but never tried to really be good at it until i got my first set of parallel pens...boy...that was like a gateway drug.  :D

and after watching a series of YouTube videos of folks trying Engrosser's Script, i ended up spending mucho $$$ with my "pals" PIA and JNB.  trying to practice everyday since first week of December 2016.  hoping to get better over time!

i joined The Flourish Forum to chat with folks having the same interest in calligraphy.

"bubuli" means "lizard" in our language. :)
