Thank you so much everyone! I can't get over how kind and helpful everyone has been. I'm excited to try out a light pad on my next project though. The grid technique does work... but I'd much rather try the more efficient way.
Starlee, thank you so much... flourishing is so far above and beyond what I can understand at this point. I watched a video of a gentleman just doing freehand bird flourishing. It totally blew my mind! I hope to be able to do the same (one day).

Donna, I wish I had thought of that! I'm sure a light box would have made my life a million times easier. What I did was a "grid" pattern... it's a pretty easy technique I learned about waaaaay back in Drawing 1.
Basically I drew one side of the filigree freehanding on tracing paper. I then overlayed a grid on the image - and also drew a grid using the same dimensions on my certificate. Then all I had to do was look at an individual square from my original drawing - and replicate it onto the certificate (one square at a time). I think if I had been using a pencil or if I had better hand control with a pen they would have been exact mirrors of each other. At my current level though little blips and squiggles had to be incorporated lol so they aren't exactly the same on both sides.
Photocopying, flipping and using a light table definitely seems like the more efficient way of working in this case though... does anyone have a light box they use that they would recommend?

Oh no! Oh well, I had asked the couple to write exactly what they wanted - and to double check the spelling. That was how they gave it to me, so maybe they had a reason lol... at the very least, I guess they won't notice 
The ladybug is in the very center, right above the words "Celebrate our Marriage". It doesn't look exactly like a ladybug to me (partially because I didn't include the characteristic spots... but I couldn't figure out a graceful way to include them).

Hi everyone!
Sorry I've been MIA from the Forum for a bit... trying to prepare for midterms while working on a few things on the side.
Here is my first significant project I've done with calligraphy, it is a "marriage certificate" for a Quaker style wedding.
The major points were that the couple wanted to incorporate a few "personal touches" without them being too obvious. Specifically they wanted pine cones and a lady bug incorporated into the filigree... but they didn't want them to be distractedly obvious. Also, the groom wanted to incorporate two goats into the design, but they had to fit in later - because he didn't want the bride to see them in the in progress shots.
With the calligraphy itself, they gave me complete free-rein, but because I'm a newbie... I just tried to stick with Copperplate. I know it's not perfect, but overall - I was pretty happy with the results.
The most difficult things for me were: writing copper plate on an arch for some of the sentences... as well as figuring out the "&'s". I can't even pretend to know how to make an ampersand... I just sort of free handed a bunch until I found one I thought fit alright. Also, I learned how difficult it is to try and match the filigree on both sides. There are quite a few mistakes in the filigree, but again - it was the best I could do at this time.

Erica, I know exactly what you mean - I'm in the middle of my BFA thesis right now... and time is the one thing I wish I had more of lol. I think your project sounds fascinating though, and I'd love to see what comes of it when you do find the time for it
I am definitely not an expert by any means, but recently I have been taking a Tai Chi class - and my instructor always discusses "qi" (I could be misspelling that) - which from what I understand, is an energy found in all living things. I would love to know if there is a correlation between the Eastern idea of "qi", and the (possibly more Western) concept of vibrations that you have brought up.
FrenchBlue Joy: HAHA! Oh my gosh yes, all of the "Drunk History's" are equal parts gross and hilarious... the actors really are what make it for me I will have to revisit Drunk History on youtube, it's been awhile.

How interesting! Wouldn't it be fun to document the zentangles of different individuals - and see their "vibrations" or the different wavelengths they are functioning on?
I really need to do more research on Tesla - other than what I've heard about the Tesla vs. Edison disagreement - I really don't know much about this fascinating guy.

I'm actually about an hour or so from Nashville - but I am definitely going to look into one of these classes. I might not be able to swing it until this summer... but it looks like she offers basic classes fairly regularly
