Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Public announcement
« on: May 04, 2014, 08:12:45 AM »
I am also nervous about posting on the forum... but this thread has encouraged me! I am loving the forum and have now read quite a few threads... some of the discussions have inspired me to produce some new work [still at sketchy stage] - hopefully a fruitful seam of inquiry.
I'm not a trained calligrapher but I went to art college and studied Fine Art and Critical theory.... means I had to write a lot of essays before making anything! I've been trying to tie my love of calligraphy into my fine art practice for decades... with limited success... but I think I'm finally getting somewhere.

Now I've killed a thread stone dead.... :-\    !

Coffee & Nib-bles / Re: Where in the World?

Devon, UK - where railway lines fall into the sea.

I use a straight nib holder because I am lazy... i.e. it's easier to dunk a straight holder into a bottle of ink, so I don't have to decant :-) I also feel less removed from the paper with a straight holder... I thought I was bonkers feeling this until I read that Rachel Yallop uses a straight holder for this reason.
I did originally use an oblique nib holder but it didn't really help me because even for my normal handwriting I have my paper at a funny angle... plus the nib holders I now use take all my broad edged nibs and my pointed nibs. I am practical if nothing else!

Workshops & Conference News / Re: Who is Signed Up for IAMPETH 2014
« on: May 04, 2014, 06:43:49 AM »
I wish we had something like IAMPETH in the UK. I have read blog posts from those who have been and it looks like such a huge fun event. There is a CLAS festival in August, but it seems to have more of a bias towards broad edged pen lettering... although Massimo Polello is running a workshop... again the emphasis is on working with flat brush work.
I do belong to the Copperplate Special Interest Group in the UK and we exchange envelopes... this has been great, but it definitely feels like copperplate is a niche interest in the UK!

Introductions / Hello from Devon, UK!
« on: April 25, 2014, 12:12:45 PM »
Hello,
This forum looks fab!
I've been a blogger since 2008 and in 2011 I also began blogging about calligraphy - now at wonky-words.com
I love calligraphy and I'm looking forward to finding like minded friends on this forum... I am not used to forums... this is my first... hopefully I will get the hang of it!
