Contemporary and Modern Calligraphy / Re: chalk art?
« on: September 13, 2016, 02:21:30 PM »
@Erica McPhee I've cleaned the boards as much as possible before spraying the rust-oleum chalk spray paint - black over them. Some boards had (ghost) chalk marker still on them, because I didn't clean them for a while (oops) and the new paint covered it just fine.

@silvereye I haven't tried that one, but the first chalk paint I used was a tiny jar I found at Target hot spot and it worked just fine. It coated my boards perfectly well and was enough for a few boards. For a dollar, who can beat that?! But I noticed that the paint would rub off a bit when cleaning the artwork. Not too much, but just a bit. Left my cleaning rags black. But like I said, $1.

@Elisabeth_M for color, I have started to use soft pastels that I purchased at my local Hobby Lobby. I didn't get too crazy with pricier ones just yet, as I wanted to test out soft pastels first to see if they worked to my liking... I got a 25-piece set of round ones, that I could sharpen with my pencil sharpener (the bigger hole of a double-sharpener). But I have also used Crayola colored chalk. Works just fine. Here's a link with the Crayola colored chalk and the white anti-dust chalk. Note, the white chalk still does leave dust (it's chalk!) but maybe not as much. It is pretty smooth. I like it! Crayola Chalk And the price?! Awesome!!

Hope this helps!! :)

I use Crayola Anti-Dust chalk, so easy to use! I have a few of the double-sharpeners, and use the bigger hole for chalk. I've also been using soft pastels when I need color. Works like a charm. Of course, there are projects for which I do use chalk markers instead. It also depends on the surface. But I just started using rust-oleum chalk spray paint to resurface my boards and love it! So easy to use, dries quickly, and works with chalk, chalk markers, soft pastels...

I spit into a tissue and wipe the nib with it. Works like a charm.

All this spit talk definitely curbed my hunger, yay! Ha!

Show & Tell / Cambria Beach Wedding Styled Shoot
« on: July 20, 2016, 03:57:10 PM »
Months ago, I was approached by a local wedding and event planner (Fairy Godmother in Bakersfield, California) and was asked if I would like to collaborate in a beach-themed wedding styled shoot. I was so excited, but so nervous as well as this would be my first styled shoot!

The styled shoot has finally been published on MyWedding.com and I am so pleased with it!!

Take a look if you'd like for all of the photos... Here's a photo of my calligraphy pieces that were a part of the styled shoot.

I did a few variations of some of the pieces - some more copperplate-like than others and they chose the more casual ones. They told me they fell in love with those pieces and the look as a whole, as it related to being out at the beach and such.

That's funny! But a great compliment at the same time! Can you post a photo?

Is it just me, or does it seem like 30 days without writing copperplate seems like a lot? Is that specific to transitioning from copperplate to spencerian, or from one hand to another in general?

I'm quite late to this - but I'm going to give it a try, nonetheless. Actually, I'm going to have my husband give it a try! lol.
He's very into youtube tutorials right now for this kind of stuff. He recently made a mini motorcycle out of cigarette lighter parts. We don't smoke, so finding a lighter was step one! lol. But, he does like to drink Coca-Cola, so finding an aluminum can will be no trouble at all!! ;)
