A few thoughts...

"Make it Stick ",by Brown, Roediger, and McDaniel is an excellent book on learning and well worth the time spent reading. As to art and art skills such as calligraphy, the key is practice, practice and practice. The mental and physical repetition is needed to master any skill. Do a bit every day. It doesn't have to be much, just something to keep you involved and learning. The display you mentioned is a great way to keep it front and center in you life. Something as simple as leaning a piece on a bookshelf can be a positive reminder. The visible reminder can be inspiring and keep you on track. I wish you the best in your learning journey.

Inktober 2023 / Re: Inktober 2023 - Preliminary
« on: September 04, 2023, 06:13:41 PM »
After reading the lead post on this thread, I added the prompt list to my Bullet journal for October and jotted down a few notes on what I might draw for Inktober. Never participated before, but seriously considering it for 2023. Of course the titles will need to be in a calligraphy font style.

Very nicely done. Totally missed the bird until I backed of my view. Colors work well together.

Eastern Calligraphy / Unique presentation of calligraphy art
« on: May 02, 2021, 08:16:06 AM »
A while back I found this Korean calligraphy artist , Boothyang, on You Tube and have watched several of her videos. Some of her videos are not the calligraphy that normally comes to mind. They present a different way to express calligraphy art. The size, presentation and color are impressive.  This is one of them    /  대구 달천예술창작공간 개관식 퍼포먼스 / 이화선 작가 / Calligraphy

The flourish is elegant and the book 'Peak' is on my hold list at the library. Thanks for sharing both.  Gaining the control and skill to perform well balanced and smooth ink work is why I am on this forum.

As I have been exploring Chinese calligraphy, I have found it helpful when watching You-Tube videos to slow the viewing speed down to 25% . It allows the movement of the writing instrument to reveal more movement detail.  It has shown not only the instrument detail, but also the paper deflection as it moves across it with varying pressure. Since I have a long way to go, anything and everything helps.

Eastern Calligraphy / Re: Learning basic Chinese calligraphy
« on: October 27, 2019, 11:07:31 PM »
Chinese calligraphy presents some challenges for those not exposed by life to the language. The stroke order is one aspect, but relatively minor. The number of characters is large and the combination of characters that represent various things in life even more daunting. It would require practice to master the various strokes, then mimic something. However, an understanding of the language adds a larger dimension to the art. It begs the question of how deep do you want to go with it? Which parts to take in when learning the language and the art of Chinese calligraphy.

For myself, it is a marathon in developing any skill and knowledge of it. I'm hopeful with the coming hibernation aspect of colder weather I'll have less distractions and can actually move forward learning. My goal is to not only learn brush control, but to actually understand whatever I chose to write. Even if it is only a few characters at a time.

Design & Layout / Re: Spiral Writing
« on: August 31, 2019, 10:14:21 AM »
Sounds like you are writing from the outside and spiraling inward. A sample posted might be helpful to visualize.

If I were to take on something like that I would write it out in a line(s) in the size and script desired. Then cut the text as a paper strip, then cut between the letters and form a mock up of the final piece. As to the empty middle, have you considered some light lines to ad flourish? Blank space is important too.

Look forward to seeing your work.

Tools & Supplies / Re: A few odd questions on ink...
« on: August 24, 2019, 11:57:43 PM »
Interesting questions. You will likely need to test some inks yourself, but a few ideas. Go to your local art supply stores and talk with them. They may be able to help.

I personally like JetPens, com website. They have lots of informational videos which may or may not address the particulars of your questions.

Good Luck !

Introductions / Hi to all from the Pacific NW

I joined this forum to both explore Calligraphy and improve my handwriting. In particular Chinese Calligraphy is an interest of mine. I also am seeking to improve my handwriting so it is smoother and more legible. There is a lot of talent here and I hope to learn from it and hopefully help some others along the way.
