Broad Edge Pen Calligraphy / Multiple Capitals in a row Blackletter / Fraktur

I've been asked by someone from a BJJ school to put something together for them and I'm having some issues with having a good flow in the "BJJ" part of the name.  I'm finding it tough to make them flow together as opposed to looking like each is on its own. 

Can anyone provide any thoughts on this or good examples of it being done that I could check out?

Flourishing / Black letter Flourishing?

Hey all,

This is a core area I'm looking to improve my work and I find it much more difficult to apply flourishing techniques, especially at my limited ability, to my black letter pieces.  Could anyone direct me to any good resources for improving in this area?

Or any resounces on better understanding the fundamental ideas of how / when to use flourishing and I can try to apply it on my own?

I think thats definitely worth a read if you're still early on in your progress.

Hello all,

So as I'm getting a little more confident in my letters themselves something I'm now looking to do is improve the overall look of my pages and pieces.  I like flourishes and the such but it seems like everything about them is primarily focused on scripts like copperplate.  Could anyone direct me toward some resources or give give me general ideas on how to work on taking a "word" and making it into a "piece"?

Thanks for the reply.  I actually do use some guidelines but good clean vertical lines are definitely one of my weaker points.

I've been working on that for a while and definitely still have a while to go.

Also, could you tell me what you think of the flourishes and anything else which could be done to make the entire thing more visually interesting?

Broad Edge Pen Calligraphy / First post - Feedback on Fraktur

This is one piece from a series I've been doing for practice of the laws from the 48 Laws of Power.  It was a 6mm and 2.4mm pilot pen on strahmore sketch paper.

The things I'm really trying to work on are consistency, like the E in "offend" is wider than the others, and really getting down that "picket fence" texture.  They go together though as the texture will come with more consistency for sure.

The other thing I've been working on is trying to make something more of a full piece than just words on a page.  I've definitely struggled with flourishes and thats something I really look to improve on, especially with the resources of this forum.



I'd appreciate any and all feedback on how to improve this piece.

Introductions / Hello, Fraktur in NY

Hello all,

I've been practicing black-letter for roughly 14 or so months.  Primarily I've been practicing fraktur but I might start giving TQ a shot also.  I'm not the best at clean straight lines which is my concern there but it'll prob help me improve overall.  I took one two day class a few months back but outside of that all my experience has been from IG and Reddit basically.  I've been pretty active in r/calligraphy and r/scribes for feedback which is where most of my improvement / growth has come from.  All I've used to date are the 2.4, 3.8 and 6mm nibs.

My goal here is exposure to a larger group of calligraphers that I can learn from and interact with to better my knowledge of tools, techniques and the such while (hopefully) one day being able to provide the same support to others.
