help regarding getting started with gothic in pilot parallel
« on: March 26, 2018, 04:15:30 PM »
Hello Everyone , Nancy here.
I am 56 , a mother to 3 and grandmother to 5 , which makes me young enough to begin learning calligraphy lol .(read total beginner!)
I am at a point in life where I have time on hand and whats out there thats better than learning calligraphy .

Can someone please help me get started with gothic/blackletter (I think thats what its called? ) (fraktur?)
I am interested in learning with the pilot parallel pens .

Can someone please help me get started regarding where I could find drills / practice sheets / fundamental strokes / letters / alphabet / miniscules / majuscules , just like they have it out for copperplate ?

Thank a ton !

Hi Nancy,
Welcome! It seems like a great time to start learning. I *highly* recommend Alice Young's new book: Colour & Curves . This is a fantastic book for Gothic using the Pilot Parallel pen. And it comes with a bonus pack of the 16 exercise sheets in the book.   ;D

Oh, I hadn't heard about that, @Erica McPhee looks good! I also like this workbook by Julien Chazal it's French, but has so much visual explanation, that it probably also works if you don't speak French.

Lettres and Ornements Gothiques [Flourish affiliate link to Amazon]

I also see that it is much more expensive in the US than in Europe.

I also like his:

Calligraphy: A Complete Guide [Flourish affiliate link to Amazon]

which covers many gothic hands (among lots of other historical and modern styles). But that is more a reference book and less a workbook.

Fraktur mon Amour is a great ressource of Blackletter fonts, and it's out of print it's quite expensive by now, sadly.

Excellent resources. I *love* the Julien Chazal, Calligraphy: A Complete Guide. It is a great resource for other scripts as well.

Hey

Late to the party but I wanted to throw out there the r/scribes FAQ also has a lot of really good resources and breakdowns of the black letter scripts: https://www.reddit.com/r/Scribes/wiki/beginner-faq

I think thats definitely worth a read if you're still early on in your progress.
