My newbie hand lettering efforts :)
« on: June 19, 2016, 12:05:01 PM »
My newbie efforts ;) This was part of my collegework for a typographic heroes brief in my final block. Anyway I was quite pleased with how the leaflets and poster came out. The leaflet names and watercolour washes I did as separate artwork which was scanned in and put the rest together in illustrator. The poster is a scan of the original watercolour poster I did, I decided to keep that original instead of vectorising it :)

Very cool!  I am a watercolor junkie, so especially enjoy that element of it.

Oh same! And thank you :)

Weirdly it was brush lettering that got me into watercolours. Got my hands on some Russian paint called St Petersburg White Knights. OMG! Vivid; concentrated; poured, whole pan goodness!! Can't beat them on the price for the quality too :)

Why thank you :)
I was the only person in the class not to use only digital medium. If I could have gotten away with hand lettering the main body text on the leaflets I would have! Too wee for a noob like me though lol

This was March this year :) When I say I'm a noob I mean it. Saying that I have surprised myself because I got into graphic design to create and offer cover art for other authors, I'm now half way through and start year 2 on the 30th August and I am hell bent on leaving as top of the class (now I'm there I need to stay there - ain't no competition like your own score from last year) and not as a cover artist - but as a typographer.

My writing has come on leaps and bounds since this example. It's the letter writing that's done it, I can't do drills to save myself (though I am working on a letter from my novels which I may turn into a drill sheet and once I have 20 or so copies do a "limited edition" givaway or something.

Anyway... I digress... I love watercolour. My mum got me the Russian paints - St Petersburg White Night's (I probably mentioned that) but I also have a wee travel set of W&N Cottman and the difference in quality is substantial. The White Night's paints are the best I've ever used. I got into watercolour through brush lettering and I just love it. Used it for my "world without words" project (Idiograms/icons I did a set for Aspergers https://thistleyroses.wordpress.com/2016/05/16/part-3-college-project-world-without-words-through-the-eyes-of-aspie-ladies/ ) and it was utterly different to the digital ones everyone else handed in. I kinda like that.

Hi Karen Gray,

You are so full of wonderful ideas. Wish i would come up with those :D
I think you are lucky to still study and also do things that you like. Your story in a way inspires me.
Wish you good luck for your 2nd year and hoping to see more work on this forum. You have a wonderful watercolour style.
I think you should work on it and make it a unique style of your own.

Hope I'm one of the lucky ones to have the 'limited edition' copy :D
