Greetings from Japan/Seattle.
« on: July 22, 2016, 08:58:09 PM »
Hi all, I'm a 20 year old Japanese who lives in Seattle at the moment. I started calligraphy about a year and a half ago and mostly did broad edge scripts.

I went to the Portland IAMPETH convention and since then I'm just practicing my first pointed pen script, Spencerian. It's a really beautiful script but also hard to get it right.

Anyway, nice to meet you!

Yōkoso @LazYuki

Spencarian is a beautiful script to use. I'm focussing on copperplate/engraver's script first as I have a problem with too much pressure so I find Spencarian extra hard. I'll get to it eventually though.

Do you find that you prefer Spencarian script to broad pen or do you like them equally?

@ash0kgiri  IAMPETH was amazing! I really enjoyed it.

@eric_son  I started calligraphy with textura quadrata, and since then I've tried out uncial, foundational, fraktur, bastarde, and italic. I'm mainly practicing Spencerian but I've also tried engrosser's and pointed uncials for pointed edges.

@Karen Gray   Spencerian when executed right (obviously not by me) is really beautiful. Currently, my pointed pen skills are really really bad so I still prefer broad edge, but if I get better at it, I don't know which ones I would prefer!

This http://imgur.com/a/y51zv is what I did quickly just now to show you how good/bad I am at various scripts.

Hi @LazYuki

What an amazing hand you have and that too in so many scripts, broad pen as well as pointed.
Loved the 'Fraktur' style. And i see lot of calligraphers using this style. It just looks awesome.
Pointed uncials is great and the spencerian is just perfect. The flourishes are nice and the strokes looks confident.
Even though Im quite new to pointed pen I can understand basics. There are masters who will give you proper advise on engrossers and spencerian.

I would love to learn broad pen from you. You can find my broad pen drills here - http://theflourishforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=4823.0
Let me know if there is any book or calligrapher you are following for broad pen.

Keep posting and keep writing.

Thank you @ash0kgiri

Looking at your broad edge scripts, I don't think I'm the one to teach you, it's the other way around!
I usually just look at instagram to see nice broad edge scripts. I know I should look at the old exemplars, and I'm planning on doing that in the future.

Hi @LazYuki

Im very new to broad pen as you can see from my post. That when i started. Now i have not done broad pen for quite a while as I'm focusing on Copperplate and its quite addictive. However I follow one style in broad pen which are called gentle gothic which i learnt from an online site.

You have a nice command over your broad pen calligraphy and working in so many styles is difficult as each one has a different treatment. And you are doing it for quite sometime now. So pass on any interesting exemplars related to 'Fraktur'.

Ashok

Hi @ash0kgiri

I've never heard of gentle gothic but it looks nice. If I had to give you an advice, it'd be to "give more space" between some letters. Especially in two consecutive vertical strokes, I know you feel like filling up the space, but if you separate them about the width of a vertical stroke, it creates this rhythm and it could look nicer. I attached a pic to show what I mean. (Should've used a guideline)

My fraktur, is based on other people's fraktur that you can see on instagram. I'm sure they are following something but I don't know the original source of this.
