Spencerian Envelope from 1963
« on: September 24, 2021, 01:12:21 PM »
I happened across this little gem in a gift store that had some old ephemera and postcards. It was $0.35. Just the envelope. SOLD!  ;D The woman at the desk apologized that it was just the envelope. I said, ďAre you kidding me? I love it.Ē

It was written by Cephas Riley from Clifton Tennessee (scratched return address on the back). According to the 1940 census, he was born in 1889 so he was 74. I just love thinking about where did Mr. Riley learn to do Spencerian? How old was he when he learned? And what did he send to Mrs. May Cole and Mrs. Ruth in 1963?  ;D

Which then set me to wondering will some time in another 50 or so years will someone find one of my envelopes and have similar thoughts?  :-*

Indeed they will. Just keep writing them and sending them.
Spread the joy.

This is interesting.  What was your source for a 1940 census?  Would I simply Google "1940 Census"?  I wonder about familial information.

What a lovely find! Makes me want all the more to continue my practice and help seed the world with envelopes and postcards addressed and inscribed with writing that has personality.

Oh!  And I'd forgotten to mention that the $0.05 George Washington stamp took me immediately back to my days as a six-year old child in 1963!  I REMEMBER that stamp!  We also received US Postal Service home deliveries twice per day back then.  We were used to asking "did the morning mail come? Did the afternoon mail come?"

Sweet days ...

In the UK, until a few years ago, postal deliveries were twice a day. The good old days. :)

At one point, New York city had 9 deliveries a day--1905--a bit before my time. But I do remember morning and afternoon deliveries of newspapers in the 1950's. Our local post office (Bradford, NH, pop. 625) still had mint stamps for sale of the Presidential Series (1938) in the late '50's and early 60's. Different times.

My how times have indeed changed.  Within last several weeks at least two days the postal individual did not even stop at our house.  I know because I had outgoing letters that sat in the receptacle.  ???
