Open Flourish | General Discussion / Wise Words from Paulo Coelho
« on: September 23, 2014, 09:26:43 AM »
Saw this on Paulo Coelho's Facebook Page & thought it was appropriate to us all:

All the energy of thinking is eventually shown in the nib of a pen.

Of course, here we can substitute nib by ballpoint, computer keyboard, or pencil, but the nib of a pen is more romantic, don’t you think?
To get back to the theme: words eventually condense an idea.

Paper is just a support for this idea.
But the pen will always remain with you, and you must know how to use it.

Periods of inactivity are necessary – a pen that is always writing ends up losing the awareness of what it is doing.
So let it rest whenever possible, and concern yourself with living and meeting your friends.

When you return to the business of writing, you will find a happy pen with all its strength intact.
Pens have no conscience: they are an extension of the writer’s hand and desire.

They serve to destroy reputations, make us dream, send news, trace pretty words of love.
So always be clear about your intentions.

The hand is where all the muscles of the body, all the intentions of the person writing, all the effort to share what he feels, are concentrated.
It is not just a part of his arm but an extension of his thought.

Hold your pen with the same respect that a violinist has for his instrument.

True, right?  ;D

Tools & Supplies / Pearl Ex Powdered Pigments
« on: July 21, 2014, 12:20:18 PM »
After seeing someone's IG & how they use Pearl Ex Powders, I had to rush out & buy some ('cause any 'new' tool I just have to get!)

Bought the copper, mixed with distilled water & tried it on paper...a tad difficult to use but...beautiful!

But...when it dried, most of it turned back to powder & ended up brushing off.  It still had some lustre but wasn't as brilliant.  :(

Any thoughts or anyone else use it that can help me find a good consistency?!?

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Writing on Glass
« on: June 13, 2014, 09:37:41 AM »
I've seen a lot of calligraphers writing wedding seating charts, menus, etc. on glass.

I'd like to attempt a project for my kids' teachers for an end of the year gift but have no clue what to use!   :o

Recommendations for best tools for writing on glass please!

Open Flourish | General Discussion / When do you find the time?
« on: April 23, 2014, 12:42:55 PM »
I'm struggling to find time to practice & am wondering when you all get the time.

I'm a single mama that's up at 5:45a to get myself ready, then the kids are up at 6:15a & it's getting them ready & breakfast & squeezing in a cup of tea for myself.  The kids get dropped off at the babysitter at 7:30a & I start my hour long commute to my full time job.  I work until 4:30p & then commute home.  Get kids from babysitters so then it's dinner & activities (dance, soccer, Guides, Beavers, etc.)  Thursday & Friday are our "off" nights so I like to devote time to them & we play board games or have dance parties or whatever.  They're off to bed between 8p & 9p at which point I start making lunches for the next day, clean the kitchen, tidy the house.

By 9:30p-10p when I *finally* get the chance to sit down, I just want to relax & while I find calligraphy to be relaxing...getting out the supplies & setting up my workstation, etc. just seems like *so* much so I usually don't.

This has turned into a real pity party for me & it wasn't supposed to!  :-\

Just wondering where you find the time?  I love the art & want to learn & practice but lately it feels like a real chore.   :'(

Show & Tell / "Customer" order!
« on: February 18, 2014, 12:43:48 PM »
My friends are the best & support me in my craft so my girlfriend "ordered" this quote.  I put it on scrapbook paper to make it an 8x10 so she could frame it.

I used yellow gouache & is only my 2nd time using gouache!  I think it turned out ok & I love, love, love the quote!

 :)  Hi everyone!

My name is Caroline & I am a newbie to the calligraphy world!  I have always been in love with beautiful handwriting & calligraphy but it wasn't until just a wee while ago that I decided to jump in!

I took my first workshop (so hard to find out here!) a couple of weeks ago & loved it!

Looking forward to learning more & sharing my journey with you all!  :)
