Calligraphy Guilds / Re: List of Calligraphy Guilds
« on: May 15, 2019, 03:53:44 PM »
Thank you, Erica.  I should note that there is another group forming but they will be a Regional group associated with Society for Calligraphy a little north of San Diego, in the L.A. area.  I don't believe they have a meeting place yet.  I may consider joining at a later date, depending upon location of the meetings, but I'm unable to travel to L.A. for various reasons so all those lovely classes in L.A. would be out of my reach.

The San Diego Fellow Calligraphers have voted to disband.  Our last meeting is in June 2019.  I really enjoyed the group but have only been there 6 months.  I think this group has been around for many years.  It's a shame to see this happen.  The wonderful people who are the core members have been doing the work for so long and there were a few who could not return to be on the board this year.  A call for new board members produced 1 or 2 volunteers but that was not enough to keep things going.

Introductions / Re: Hi everyone, from Mary in California

Hi Mary!  Welcome.  I used to quilt - have stacks and stacks of fabric in the "quilting room" and they are lonely now because I can't tear myself away from calligraphy.   Did you see the movie Phantom Thread?  It sounds like you may have!  Where are you in CA?  I need a quilt that I pieced a few years ago to be quilted.  I'm in San Diego.  If you're here, we have a wonderful calligraphy guild.

Hope to hear more of your calligraphy and quilting adventures!

Hi Chas,

I'm a little late in welcoming you, but I'm wondering how you are doing with your Valentine's presents?

Welcome to the Flourish Forum; there are lots of great people and great resources here!

Hi Aaron,

I am fairly new here, too, but as you will find out, Flourish Forum is a great resource.  The thing I like best is being able to initiate a conversation to get feedback on questions I have as I learn calligraphy.  You might want to consider joining a calligraphy guild if there is one in your area.  It helps to be around other calligraphers.

Welcome!  Hope to hear more about your calligraphy journey!

Welcome, Iskender!   I'm fairly new here, but, as you can see by the responses, it is a fantastic resource.   I think that calligraphy is very frustrating and I am moving slowly.  I've been practicing copperplate for about a year and a half, but I do not do it regularly enough.  If you are able to practice every day, you will see amazing results within a few months.  I also love Blackletter and am just starting to learn that.   Hope to interact with you more and hear about your calligraphy journey.

Hi Brian!  Welcome.  I am also in So. CA - San Diego to be exact.  Do you belong to a calligraphy guild?  We have a very friendly group here in San Diego.  I know you would be welcome.

Tools & Supplies / Re: Magnifiers
« on: February 13, 2019, 09:19:18 PM »
@AnasaziWrites  I just put the batteries into my Carson Magnivisor Deluxe.  (Link at the bottom.)  At this time, it is $32.99 and I love it already.  It is more expensive than some of the alternatives,  but it really is great.  I think it will also come in handy for any precise work for household projects.  There are 4 different strengths of detachable lenses.  The light source can be popped out of the headpiece and used as a stand-alone light on your table - pointed directly at your work.  It also has a magnetic backing.  It is eligible for your designated charity as an Amazon smile donation.  There is a video on the product page at Amazon that you should watch.  There is another video on YouTube and I think that is for a newer or upgraded version of this light.  That YouTube video lists some uses for the different strengths of the lenses.

I can keep the magnifier glasses I bought at the drugstore in my tote bag which is designated for to the San Diego Fellow Calligraphers meetings, so I am happy to have those also.  My thanks to everyone who took the trouble to respond; I really appreciate you!

You can find it here:  https://smile.amazon.com/Optical-MagniVisor-Head-Worn-Magnifier-Different/dp/B007CDJKM2/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_1?keywords=Carson+Magnivisor+Deluxe&qid=1550109458&s=gateway&sr=8-1-fkmrnull

Hi stenolearner.  Welcome!  I am interested in Copperplate, too.  Have you decided how to attack it?  My only unrequested advice is to start with basic letterforms rather than someone else's interpretation of the style.  I started off learning someone else's interpretation of Copperplate and it wasn't a good fit.

I recently took a class from Phyllis Macaluso and she says to start by learning the basics and then you can change it like an artist.  I thought that was such good advice that I started over (after a year) and I used Eleanor Winter's book Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy.  But maybe there are other ways that I don't know about.  I'm sure that question has probably been asked and answered on here!

Best wishes on your journey.

Hi Athina.  Welcome!  I started my journey 14 months ago so I'm fairly new at it, too.  This is a great place to find answers to the many questions you'll have!

Happy New Year!
