« on: July 04, 2022, 11:05:22 AM »
Happy 4th of July for all the Americans on Flourish! I found this amazing book of the Illuminated Declaration of Independence at the Nashville Calligraphy Guild book sale! What a find! It was penned by Sherman Ellsworth Notestine in 1905. I thought I would share a few images in celebration!  ;D

Show & Tell / Rare (for me) Roman Cap and Italic Work
« on: June 03, 2022, 01:16:49 PM »
I was recently asked by a very dear friend (a police officer) to calligraph a set of capital letters that a friend of his texts him every night and their meaning. I donít usually do this type of work but this person is one of the nicest people I know and I canít say no to him.  ;D

I knew Copperplate or Spencerian wasnít going to look right so I decided to use pointed pen Roman Caps and broad pen Italic. I started doing Italic when I was 10 or 11 years old but it took a backseat once I started doing pointed pen scripts around 1993. I recently took John Stevenís Italic variation class (which was incredible by the way and his hand outs are the equivalent of a complete book in PDF format). Iím still trying to shake off my earlier influences and although needing some practice, Iím starting to make progress.

I did the background in ProCreate and scanned in the calligraphy. It is 11x14 and I had it printed on a hanging piece of tag board which had a piece of wood across the top. (Forgot to get a pic of that darn it.) I was really happy with how it turned out and so was he.  :)

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Engraving?
« on: June 03, 2022, 01:08:33 PM »
Anyone else getting into free-hand engraving? Living 35 minutes from Paper & Ink Arts is not only delightful but dangerous for my wallet!  ;D When I was there last, I picked up InkMeThisís engraving machine. It is so quiet! And so smooth. I had tried engraving a couple of times with an old drill my mom picked up at a yard sale. It was loud and bulky. But this new one works like a dream.

I am walking around the house finding things I can engrave. LOL! This is the soap dispenser for my studio sink room. I tried to come up with something clever to write on it but this is the best I could do. Ha ha!

2022 Exchanges / My Flower Power Exchange 2022
« on: May 27, 2022, 10:48:09 AM »
Everyone should have received this by now so I thought I would share my Flower Power exchange. I loved this exchange and had so much fun doing both the envelopes and inside quote. Iím not very adept at composition yet as I donít do a lot of it so this is great practice. I hope other participants will share theirs, too.  :-*

P.S. I learned the floral envelope techniques in Brenda Waltonís Happy Mail class. The solo envelope is my momís Motherís Day card.  ;D

Flourishing / Constructing Flourishes on Lettering
« on: May 19, 2022, 07:16:27 PM »
@Cyril Jayant  has asked for a few examples of how to use some flourishes and so I was practicing today and did these examples. These are slightly different from the ones @Ken Fraser posted here .

I like to keep my shades on downward strokes rather than fill them in as I almost always mess them up if I try to add them after.

A few pointers:
  • Let the direction of the letter dictate the flourish you use.
  • Keep the shapes of the flourish as oval as you can.
  • Use whole arm movement.
  • Decide if you want to do an over loop or under loop before starting.
  • Trace the shape of the flourish above the paper before putting nib to paper.
  • Develop a happy medium between speed and intention.
  • Use a primary shade, secondary, and even tertiary shade to add balance and interest.
  • End your flourish with intention, donít just let it fly off the pen.

I did the Darby one first, white ink on black and included one on white paper without lines so you can see the flourish better. On this version, the main flourish comes down and to the right. On the Cyril, the flourish comes down and to the left.

These were done with a Zebra G.

Spencerian Script / Practice white on black paper
« on: May 17, 2022, 04:23:18 PM »
I have been brushing up on my Spencerian Script lately and I decided to do some white (Doc Martens Bleedproof White) on black paper. I like it because you can really see every line and can find any areas for improvement. These are all the places we have lived over the years or that have some significance to our family.  I could do this for days.  ;D

Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight... The sun will come out tomorrow... Well it's a marvelous night for a moon dance! This will be a good one - I'm already thinking of ideas. The Sun, the Moon, & the Stars - which one will it be, or perhaps all three!

Stumbled across this magnificent piece which led me down the rabbit hole. This site is described as: Free access to all medieval and some modern manuscripts of Switzerland by means of a virtual library. You could spend days! They have not updated it to an SSL site yet. But there is an extensive collection. E-codices

ProCreate Calligraphy / ProCreate Calligraphy & Lettering!
« on: March 31, 2022, 08:59:07 PM »
I have been doing a lot of work on my ipad lately using the ProCreate app. This app is absolutely incredible and complete game changer for calligraphers and lettering artists. I am taking a few lettering classes and have been practicing my Spencerian and vaguely Madarasz script  ;D using the ipad pencil. Anyone else? I would love to see what others are doing.

Show & Tell / Love One Another exchange 2022
« on: February 28, 2022, 11:45:49 AM »
Itís been so quiet! Hopefully itís because everyone is busy, busy doing calligraphy.  ;D
I thought I would share my exchange from Valentineís Day. I found these lovely menus at a local shop and just knew I had to put calligraphy on them. I did the watercolor first, then the lettering, and finally added a bit of silver leaf. I did one original and then printed the finals. I added the silver leaf after printing.
The envelopes were a challenge - first finding the right size for the menus (thank you JAM paper via Amazon). I love the texture and feel of vellum envelopes! But these buggers would not take ink well. I originally wanted to use gold ink but it just beaded up and I am allergic to sandarac powder so I resorted to markers. Fun though!
I felt it needed a little brightness so I added the watercolor flowers after doing the addresses.
Would love to see if anyone else wants to share theirs.  :-*

I was sent this interesting information from Stationery Trends regarding a postal reform bill which has passed the House and is now with the Senate.
