2024 Exchanges / Let's hear it for the USPS
« on: September 01, 2024, 05:32:19 PM »
Three cheers for the USPS--they have set a new record for delivery time (6 months, 24days). A Valentine's Day exchange card I mailed on February 5, 2024 has just been returned to me on August 29, 2024, claiming insufficient address. Although they pasted a sticker over it, I have a scan on this envelope the day I sent it and the address is complete, correct, and current, and completely legible, as it is printed.
I'll be resending it in a larger envelope with the hope it arrives in time for Valentine's Day, 2025, but it might be close. I could walk to CT from GA in less time.
Anyone missing an exchange card from me this year--there's still hope you'll get it.

Spencerian Script / Back to Basics -- Let's Go Way Back
« on: August 08, 2024, 05:05:44 PM »
Just as I was scanning these books, @Erica posted a thread about going back to the basics with Nina Tran. Let's go way back, shall we?

I have a collection of these copy books, and just recently bought a copy of book 9, c. 1868, in the copy books by the Spencer family (the second pair pictured). This is the first time I saw little flourishes one could practice, which caught my attention.

The first pair is also book nine from an earlier edition--1859--so published when P. R. Spencer was alive, which I've had for quite a while. What struck me at the time was at this more advanced level, how small the x-height was--in this case about 1mm (about 1/25th of an inch), both look like what might now be called ladies hand.

These books were usually published in sets of 8-10, and copies of books 1-3 are fairly common. Books 8-9 are considerably rarer, I guess because most people never kept at it long enough to get through to the higher numbers.

Though you might enjoy seeing what was done earlier if one stuck with it.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Happy Valentine's Day
« on: March 28, 2024, 04:44:58 PM »
Hi everyone.
Yesterday, my wife received a Valentine's Day card. From me. Mailed Feb 5, 2024. Mailed to our house via a post office 1/2 mile away. Then sent to a major sorting facility about 10 miles away. The 20 mile round trip letter took 7 weeks and two days to get here. Go USPS.
So, there is a little hope that any of you to whom I've sent a letter in the last several months might actually some day receive it.

Tools & Supplies / Diamine Inkvent 2023
« on: December 21, 2023, 11:33:41 AM »
With kind permission from Inkvent Master @K-2 , I'm going to quote K's introduction to last year's Inkvent, as K explains it well, and begin this year's Inkvent calendar. We will have to await K's participation until January or so, as K's schedule is very crowded just now. It's actually day 21 today, but I'll start with day one and post as many days I can, albeit in a simple form, to which I may or may not add as time goes by.

Feel free to participate in any way you like, even if you don't have this year's calendar (which features purple this year).

Inkventors - get ready to post!  Much like Inktober, there really aren't "rules" to Inkvent.  The only courtesy we should observe is to not post ahead of schedule or out of order so as to not spoil the surprise for those Inkventors who are dutifully opening those little doors in order, and as scheduled.  I know @AnasaziWrites got his box in the mail!  who else is with us?

Of course, maybe you didn't purchase the set, but still want to ink!  You can use the name of the ink as your prompt, just like in Inktober, if you like; you'll just have to wait until the day of for the reveal.  But that's fine.  There's no way I'm going to be able to post every day this time around.  It's just a super busy time at work, and I've committed a lot of time to working with my kid's school's music boosters, and I have to travel for the holidays.  Eventually we'll all get through all the inks - just like last time (even though it took through January): https://theflourishforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=7287.0
@Zivio & @Lucie Y & @tiffany.c.a & @Erica McPhee & @InkyFingers - you were all such awesome Inktoberists!  maybe you'll come in for Invent too!

As participants on the Forum have often noted - you can use fountain pen inks with dip pens if you doctor them a bit.  I also use fountain pen inks for drawing and painting.  All the drawings I posted in the Inktober 2021 and 2022 threads were done with fountain pen inks for instance.  They have some wonderful properties of shading and chromatography, making them a very exciting art medium.  Nick Stewart shows off their amazing range on his blog: https://nickstewart.ink/

Hence, I'm posting to the "Tools and Supplies" area, since this thread will produce a catalogue of lovely, colorful inks that may be helpful for some future project.

My posts will be done on Strathmore Bristol Smooth 300 or 400. I did the first ink, Fortunes Gold, using a Gillott 604ef nib, but switched to a Spencerian #1, which is a little less sharp, for the rest unless noted otherwise. Seems to work better with these fountain pen inks. Also, all these inks come in 12 ml bottles, so when I mention adding gum arabic to the ink, it is added to the full bottle.

Sparkle

Last week I was watering the moss lawn in the early morning, and the water from the sprinkler made the leaves of our maple just sparkle. Focusing on the leaves with a shallow depth of field (sound familiar?), it turned the nearby drops of water into "bubbles." Fun.

Ink is from the past two "Inkvent" calendars. Random selection.
