Inktober 2023 / Re: Day 15 - 2023: Dagger

@Erica  McPhee Ohhhh Erica this is such good news! I am so happy to read this  :) :) :)

@K2 thank you for your kind words. I was quite nervous to teach. It is usually frowned upon when beginners teach... but I work in a field in which everyone teaches whoever is less experimented than them.

Also, I adore that knife shaped K, coolest thing I've seen in a while!

@Mark T the workshop went very well, thank you. After all, I'm glad I did it, it also taught me a lot. And I love teaching.
I really liked giving them an introduction on how latin calligraphy eovlved over the centuries, and showing them how the geometry of letters work and how Foundational hand helps with every other script.
I also showed them how the proportions work, from diagrams such as these, as I wish I had been introduced to these a long time ago.

@K2 and @tiffany.c.a thank you so much! I still want to go back and change the s letters to something like Filip Cislak's s's here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CyYO_O5K2JV/?img_index=1
But I'm glad I'm finally practicing layouts.
And K2: I'm still debating on leaving the text alone with plenty of white space around it, or going for a fancy border. But thank you for your kind words on my borders  :)

@Erica McPhee I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm hoping for full recovery for your son. How old is he?
I truly hope it all works out and he can play the viola confidently again. But if that pinky needs more time, the harp is a wonderful instrument that needs no pinky. I used to play the cello but now I have a celtic harp that I love <3
Good luck with everything, it's so hard when our kids have to go through such things. Best wishes to your son!

@Lucie Y  - Your work has grown tremendously. Bravo!

Si sweet of you Erica. I've been working hard at it. Progress is such a slow process, but that is part of the beauty of it I guess!

Inktober 2023 / Day 14 - Castle
« on: October 14, 2023, 05:52:57 PM »
So, tomorrow's the first workshop I give! I made some more experiments tonight with foundational hand and then went back to my "normal" calligraphy. I needed quality time with my nibs again. So I worked on a project for a friend who is a rheumatologist and particularly loves art that revolves around the hand.
(the text reads "the hand is the instrument of instruments", in French).

Here is some of my work tonight. It's my first layout attempt. And the first time I try to match texts of different size and color.

I am breaking away from the prompt list but aim at posting faithfully every day for the rest of Inktober!

See you around :)

And good luck with your day @K2!

So inspiring to see how you make art part of your day despite an outrageous agenda!
I love the color of this piece, but of course, you will judge it by your own criteria.
It would be super interesting of you said specifically whzt you don't like about certain of your pieces. I think we could all learn from that. If you feel like it.

@K2 this is so cool!!! I'd like to know what medium you are using?

Well, I spent tonight making an exemplar of Foundational Hand. It's not great but it's for that wee workshop I told you about. I'm glad I'm going back to studying the basics, but I'm anxious to go back to my personal goals (italics, roman capitals, and pretty ornamental vines).

See you soon!

@K2 I adore your entry! I'm really inspired by how you take every prompt and take the representation in calligraphy to the next level.

Tonight I'm relearning foundational hand, and doing so from Sheila Water's book. I'm doing this for Saturday's workshop because I don't see any other viable starting point for absolute beginners with 2mm bandzug nibs.
But I never studied it in depth... So, wish me luck!

Quick catch up session, as I'm preparing for a little workshop (intro to calligraphy) for my cousin and some of his friends. My cousin was my witness at my wedding and helped in many ways. So although I don't feel legitimate at all to host a calligraphy workshop, I owe him one.

Love the toad @K2, you make me want to try to write super big. Thanks for giving the details on the ink, it helps to fill in the details of whzt the picture might not show. Typically the sheen of inks are a nightmare to capture.

Today I quickly worked on toad and then back to work on a quote I've been asked to write "the hand is the instrument of instruments" by Aristotle (haven't fact checked yet) , for a friend who is a rheumatologist and who wants it for her office.

Inktober 2023 / Day 7 - Drip
« on: October 07, 2023, 05:31:02 PM »
Hi there!
I've been playing with elongating my italic letters. I'm shy with variations so I will try to be a little bit more bold in the next prompts.
This first 7 days of Inktober have given me a lot of food for thought on where I need to improve.

Anyways, can't wait to wake up to everyone's prompts!

Night night!

@K2 I love the combination of golds. Thank you for the fun facts about the symbol.

Inktober 2023 / Re: Day 5 - 2023: Map
« on: October 06, 2023, 06:02:50 PM »
@Lucie Y - quite confident swashes! Sometimes I add a swash to the top of an italic capital M to balance out the weight a bit. What a pretty ink - what kind of metallics are you using? Thank you for your kind thoughts about "Dodge" - every day is a little Inktober experiment for me!

This didn't quite go as planned - I expected a slightly bigger reaction from the bleach (I might need to refresh the jar); but drawing with bleach always carries an element of uncertainty.

Wow, I had no idea you were using bleach! How cool. You really captured that old crumpled map feel.

My metallic are the amazing sparkling watercolors by Lisilinka (a German artisan and artist). Her metallic colors are incredible and I really can't imagine using anything else now. I have @oliveleafcalli to thank for introducing me to these through her IG :)

@AnasaziWrites I really enjoy seeing illustrations that go with your calligraphy every day!
@Mary_M nice to meet you! Love the copperplate!

Here is my take on today's prompt. I spent a good chunk of the evening practicing italics in different sizes and with different tools. You can't really see that in tonight's sample, but I feel I grew a little today :)

Night night!
