Kind Critique / Re: Please help me with my Copperplate :)
« on: September 01, 2022, 02:18:28 PM »
Hi Lucie,
Sometimes it is very worthwhile to take a small break and then come back to your calligraphy. It helps your muscles to rest and your muscle memory to embed into long term memory. Usually when you go back to it, you will start to see improvement again.

For oval drills, this is such a great question! I see so many ďdrillsĒ on Pinterest and many of them are missing the point. The purpose of drills is to give your whole arm movement muscles a work out and to embed the oval shape and movements into your muscle memory. Some of the drills such as drawing little pictures is fun and does help with practicing shades and hairlines, it does nothing for your muscle movement as it requires small hand and finger movement.

Somewhere in my notes, I have some suggestions for timing, and how to do drills. I will take a look and post it when I find it.  ;D

Beautiful!

And such good advice. This is why I have spent the past 5 years relearning Copperplate and completely changing my hand. After decades of repeating the same mistakes, I relearned all the fundamentals and broke down every single letter in order to rebuild my Engrosser's Script. It has made a world of difference in all other styles as well because you can then truly "see" the letter forms.  :)

Hi Flourish Friends,
I just posted on the blog which I haven't done in years!  ;D I was fortunate enough to be gifted a copy of Younghae Chung's new book, "Classic Calligraphy for Beginners"* and I had already pre-ordered a copy so I thought it was a great opportunity to host a give away which I also haven't done in years.

Broad Edge Pen Calligraphy / Re: Script to go with illuminated letters

I like seeing the examples as it really helps. My favorite is the Humanist with its simplicity and uprightness. So @Lucie Y perhaps that means Foundational will look best. Hope you will try one of each and show us!  :)

@Zivio - can you post that question under a new topic so as not to take Lucieís post off topic? I have split Jeanís question into a new topic under our Open Discussion as well. Thanks!

These are so lovely! Both Foundational and Italic would go well with them. I prefer Italic because you can add a little bit of flourish to it, but nothing to overpower those gorgeous caps.
Canít wait to see what you do! Thanks for sharing!

 Hi Joan,
I love hearing about your calligraphy endeavor! (I also enjoy knitting, watercolor, and yoga!).

Younghae Chung has an excellent new book out called Classic Calligraphy for Beginners . It has both Copperplate and Spencerian. It is an excellent book and I highly recommend it even for those who arenít beginners. (Amazon affiliate link)

Let us know if you have any questions as you go. Welcome to Flourish!  :)

LOL! Thanks! I had resized the first one and when I did, I changed the extension which had given me an error message saying it may cause viewing problems. I ignored that given I could see it. So in the end, it was a great learning experience for me that you could not view it.  ;D
