I was recently asked by a very dear friend (a police officer) to calligraph a set of capital letters that a friend of his texts him every night and their meaning. I don’t usually do this type of work but this person is one of the nicest people I know and I can’t say no to him.
I knew Copperplate or Spencerian wasn’t going to look right so I decided to use pointed pen Roman Caps and broad pen Italic. I started doing Italic when I was 10 or 11 years old but it took a backseat once I started doing pointed pen scripts around 1993. I recently took John Steven’s Italic variation class (which was incredible by the way and his hand outs are the equivalent of a complete book in PDF format). I’m still trying to shake off my earlier influences and although needing some practice, I’m starting to make progress.
I did the background in ProCreate and scanned in the calligraphy. It is 11x14 and I had it printed on a hanging piece of tag board which had a piece of wood across the top. (Forgot to get a pic of that darn it.) I was really happy with how it turned out and so was he.
