Title: Made my own lightbox!
Post by: Linda H. on January 14, 2016, 09:32:40 AM
Hi there!

Just finished my diy lightbox. I've looked online for one, but they are so expensive and hard to find here in the Netherlands.

So I thought: why can't I make one myself? If I like it, I can alway safe money for one.

I've bought a 3D photoframe (so the picture will be at the back of the frame and the glass 1 cm above it) and I already had some LED batterypowered christmaslights. I tapes the lights into a spiral on white paper and placed it at the back of the frame. I also glued some white bakingpaper on the back of the glass so it's more milky and not seethrough. Let my boyfriend make a hole for the wires and voila..

It looks like you see the dots of the lights very good, but in real life it's not so present as on the picture.

Hope it will guide through learning the right angles and shapes for copperplate, so I can buy a good one!

Greets, Linda

Awesome work Linda, :)
That looks and works beautifully, and your practise work is really great too.

Nice job Linda. Thank you for sharing your ingenious way of creating a homemade light box.

Following your lead I have a smaller light box. I also had some small, clear LED Christmas lights and placed them inside an opaque clipboard. It works perfectly for following practice sheets.

Happy lettering,
- Catherine

Am in the process of making one myself. Discovered there is something called LED Panel lights which are mounted on the ceiling.
Using those to make one. Getting a simple wood frame to mount one of these, 2ftx2ft.
Hopefully this may come useful to someone else who wants to make 1

Ain't no shame in the handmade game! This is awesome, Linda! Looks really great. Before I got my light box, I used a big plastic tupperware container, a stack of books and my iPhone flashlight. It got the job done!

I did something similar awhile back. The difference was I ran a strip of LEDs (I had a few already from other projects) and ran it along the borders of the frame, facing inward. I taped off glass along the borders because it was a bit bright, but the center of the pane was nice and even. This was back when lightboxes were expensive. Can't really justify the cost today.
