hi Ken,

Elizabeth Gadus from Cleveland, Ohio. I wanted to say that I find Foundational to be one of the most important styles. When I teach, it is one of the first basic styles I encourage. It is overlooked by some new comers who want to learn a more advanced style. I find both Foundational and Humanistic help to strengthen the hand and teach how to use the pen edge and broad head.  Just an opinion.... It's one of my favorites.

Sincerely,
Elizgadus59

On the Foundational hand, Ken is correct, developed by Johnston in the early 20th century, provides a historical golden thread that developed as a Caroline hand contained seeds for a perfect if not nearly perfect example  of a minuscule hand developed and  based on a circle with very well disciplined letterforms.  When i do teach letterforms, and its limited to Romans, Johnston's greatest contribution relates to understand how to decipher a manuscript.  That is the importance of that one specific Harley manuscript that Johnston referred to.  All the necessary elements for developing letterforms . The manuscript in question is called the Ramsey Psalter.  13 x 9 3/4. done on or about the 10th century.  For those interested, i can scan a copy of the manuscript and email it to anyone who would like to see it . The Ramsey Psalter (Harley MS 2904) has been digitised by the British Library (http://www.bl.uk/manuscripts/FullDisplay.aspx?ref=Harley_MS_2904).
