Minimal Vector Point Placement
« on: March 10, 2014, 04:54:57 PM »
I'm posting the images to show the limited amount of points required for smooth curves in lettering created with Illustrator and Photoshop.

The bottom image is a combination of vector paths drawn in Illustrator and copied to Photoshop. In PS the paths were positioned over a scanned image of the original fountain pen lettering for use as a selection mask. The techniques in PS was no different than applying masking fluid in traditional methods. Pixels were erased with the paint brush in PS similar to using white out or scraping off pigment with razor blade on Arches paper.

Alan,
That is absolutely amazing! Wow! Truly its own artform. Thank you for sharing.

So, with the sample I was working on, would it make more sense to treat the wide lines like you did here and do a line on either side, rather than one single line and try to widen? Or is it different?

Thanks again! You are most generous with your sharing!  :)
Warm Regards,
Erica

Another tip if you have too many anchor points after manually tracing/outlining: Unter Object -> Path there is the nifty "Simplify" tool that lets you remove anchor points. Make sure to check preview and stay in the upper 90%. I usually enter a value of 98% and then do it again, it gives better results than entering a lower value. Also, do this before uniting all your shapes so you can work on each letter separately.
