Le grand live de la calligraphie
« on: February 28, 2014, 03:49:57 AM »
Hi guys,

I got this book for my birthday (thanks, mom!): http://www.amazon.de/grand-livre-calligraphie-techniques-daujourdhui/dp/2350172988/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1393576653&sr=8-6&keywords=livre+de+la+calligraphie and I must say I'm impressed.
It is in French (I have some knowledge of it from school) but even if you don't know the language it is beautiful. The book showcases different styles of calligraphy (from Gothic to Copperplate to Uncial to whatnot ...) and gives rudimentary insight into how to write them. It also examines the different tools you can use. But the really amazing thing are the artists it introduces. I've never heard of most of them, but many are simply AMAZING and worth checking out. It also divides the showcases into artsy and commercial calligraphy, which I as a graphic designer find especially interesting.
So if you'd like an (incomplete) overview of styles or are into artbooks, you need to buy this book. I could look at it for hours (and have, and will).

That is a wonderful book!

There is an English equivalent, published last March by Chronicle Books:

This is a beautiful and very useful book. Thank you for sharing Natascha.

Unfortunately, copyright still applies. However, you can see almost the entire book at the link Linda shared as well as several at the link you provided.

Gaye Godfrey-Nicholls is a very talented calligrapher from Australia. I think she works mostly with broad edged pens. Here is a video of her doing Italic.

Thanks for sharing this great book! I will add it to the home page links.
Warm Regards,
Erica

Thanks Linda for the English version. Haha, mum, whyever did you give me the French one if there's an English equivalent? Ah well. I can study calligraphy and French at the same time, so ... not bad.
