Coffee & Nib-bles / If you could change your name?
« on: February 21, 2015, 07:27:34 PM »
Just for fun!
If you could change your name, what would you change it to?

I really like Corinne, pronounced cor-IN.

So pretty in Copperplate and Spencerian!

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Need Advice, Help on Glossy Paper
« on: November 06, 2014, 04:22:14 PM »
Hi Everyone,
I have some really pretty slick/glossy paper that I'd love to use for Calligraphy but the ink keeps pulling apart and beads up as I write.  It starts to write okay at first but then it stops and skips, separates into little drops.
Black Sumi works a bit, but still can I see some places where it didn't quite catch the paper and it skips.
Bombay ink pulls apart, beads up, skips, and or feathers.
But the worst is Bleed Proof White and white Gouache.  They don't work very well at all.  Lots of pulling apart and skipping.  And I'd really love to use White on this paper.
Do you have any advice on how to treat the paper?

Fountain Pen Ink comes in so many wonderful colors.
Does anyone know if it's suitable for the pointed pen or broad edge pen?  If so, do you need to treat it with gum arabic first?
Maybe some brands are more suitable than others?

Workshops & Conference News / Spencerian Workshop with Michael Sull
« on: March 03, 2014, 12:00:24 PM »
I wanted to share with all of you.  I just got back from a two day Spencerian workshop with Michael Sull.
He is so passionate about doing all he can to preserve the art, and the history of Spencerian .  And he wants to pass on everything he knows so that it's not lost to future generations.  His Spencerian teacher was a student of Zaner and Bloser.
Michael is a good teacher.  We started at the very beginning with the basics, then miniscules, to Majuscules then Flourishing.

One of the things he mentioned was a Wonderful collection of books that were found, and are now for sale.  He urged everyone who is interested in Spencerian to consider these books to purchase.  And there is a limited quantity.   It's listed as Reprinted Penmanship Manuals.  The set sells for $70.
Here is the link.

Tools & Supplies / Fine-Tec Pearl Colors
« on: February 08, 2014, 11:57:51 AM »
Can anyone tell me how to prepare Fine-Tec colors for the Pointed Pen.  They're the ones that come in a watercolor set.
Am I supposed to use it like a regular watercolor set and put a little bit of maybe distilled water, and mix it while it's in the pan?  If so, how much water?  Then maybe brush it onto the nib?  I'm guessing of course.  I've been googling and I can't find any tutorials on how it should be prepared for use.

Also, when it's dry does the Gold color one resemble the look of gold foil?
I would really appreciate any tips and advice, and all your help.

Hi Everyone,
I am looking for a nice gold ink.  Something that resembles the look of a gold foil when it's dry.
Does anyone know of anything like that?  I would really appreciate your help.

General How To's & Projects / Italian Capital How To!
« on: January 03, 2014, 05:16:57 PM »
Hi Erica,
I had a question about the 'Italian Capitals' found in the Ames guide to Self Instruction, page 31.  The shading appears to have been done on the upstroke, which doesn't make sense to me.
I think they may have written the letter first, then they went back and added the shading, using a down stroke.   What are your thoughts on it?  I'm also wondering if this is common to Italian script?

If anyone else has any thoughts on how the shading was achieved on this particular exemplar, please share.

Thank you so much.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / French Paper Co.
« on: December 06, 2013, 02:49:53 AM »
Hi Everyone,
Has anyone ever ordered paper for Calligraphy from French Paper Company?  If so, what were the results for pointed pen?  I was on the phone with customer service today, and the rep said that she didn't think it would be good for Calligraphy.  Has anyone had any experience with their paper?
I'm looking for a nice heavy paper/card stock.

Thank you for your help.
Here's their link.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / GOUACHE
« on: November 20, 2013, 02:43:12 AM »
Hi Erica,
I hear that Gouache is wonderful to letter with, and I love all the different colors it offers, but I've never used it before.
Do you think you could give Gouache advice, help, tips, or maybe even a short video on how to prepare Gouache for lettering with the pointed pen?

Love,
Roseann
