Coffee & Nib-bles / Re: We are moving to Tennessee!

I am so happy for you Erica. No more hurricanes and the family will all be together.

I hope you will love the Nashville area. I use to live in Manchester (south of Nashville; north of Chattanooga) and we use to go to Nashville for weekend outings to shop at the mall. I loved the weather (although a little humid in the summer) and the people and food.

How exciting. What an adventure to look forward to.

I wanted to learn 'Pointed Pen Uncials' and based on recommendations, I bought the 24th Edition Speedball Textbook.

This edition does have a nice exemplar, but unfortunately, it is not broken down to show how the letters are formed. I was so disappointed. I like having the letters broken down and arrows showing how to form them.

The textbook is still nice, but I wanted to let other members know if they are looking for how to form the letters, it is not available in this textbook.

Greetings - I use to enjoy looking at the Instagram photos provided by many members here on the Forum. It was what motivated me to pursue learning, and continued to inspire me by seeing how different folks created their script work. Many also provide gentle instructions on their Instagram pages which is very helpful to those of us who cannot afford in person or online courses.

Alas, I have not been able to enjoy this lately and I just found an article that explained that Instagram will no longer provide unlimited viewing of 'public' accounts: https://mashable.com/article/instagram-requires-log-in-to-view-profiles/

I am not a fan of many social media and do not have, nor plan to create, an Instagram account. This is a personal choice and I know I will miss seeing all this work and instruction. That is okay, I still have my Flourish Forum!

I am not complaining; such is life. I am just making an observation and providing information in case anyone else has experienced this as well.

Peace,
Cat

I am sorry to hear of your concussion and subsequent surgery, but hope you are healing well.

Your illumination is beautiful. I have recently taken an interest in Illuminated Letters and Illuminated Manuscripts. Some works I have been reviewing for examples and inspiration are 'The Book of Hours', but as you demonstrate here many Bibles have beautiful works.

You did a lovely job on this and it appears you have a tiny tattoo to remind you that all is well  ;)

Hi Karl

This forum is so rich with many exceptional penman that will provide more than I can, but I wanted to share with you a few of the sites I have used that provide 'free' material from various penman of the past:

The Zanerian Manual of Alphabets (this is a great pdf guide most everyone would recommend)
https://masgrimes.com/archive/zanerian-manual

Zanerian.com provides website links to many of the great old masters
http://www.zanerian.com/Lessons.html

Mr. M G Ward has put together some of the lessons from the old Business Educator into pdf files:
https://mrmgward.com/archive/business-educator-lessons/

And if you want to buy one book with many great examples, you cannot go wrong with 'The Universal Penman' by George Bickham:
https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Penman-George-Bickham/dp/1607964082/ref=asc_df_1607964082/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312138007830&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6153203327111332201&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033471&hvtargid=pla-568061557820&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=60258871097&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=312138007830&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6153203327111332201&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033471&hvtargid=pla-568061557820

I hope some of these will be helpful.

Peace,
Cat

Thank you so much for the update. I just ordered it! My early Christmas present  :P

Very cool Erica. I did something similar to what you did, but I also added an additional line slightly above the headline and slightly below the baseline for the ascending and descending loops. This example uses a Charlton Howe example.

I agree with you about developing these based on the work of past masters. Right now I am studying WA Baird and creating a lower case exemplar based on his lessons. It is a lot of work, but I learn so much  ;)

Hi Erica - I'll try a nib when I get mine. I also like the looks and reviews for the 'FreeFelt LCD' tablet.

I hope you and yours are safe. Keeping you all in my thoughts.

Erica

What type of nib did you use and did it scratch the surface of the board at all?

Thanks for sharing this device. My little early Christmas present to myself  ;)

Hi Angela

You may also want to check out the Zanerian Manual. David Grimes has posted a pdf available to download at his website.

What an exceptional achievement. Bravo and very well done  ;)

I appreciate how Erica includes the key phrase for creating beautiful Engrosser's Script, "... Engrosser's Script is drawn, not written, and is made up of individual strokes."

This is why I enjoy this script so much. It is a meditative process for me. Learning the letter forms, stroke by stroke, and then slowly putting them together and seeing something beautiful is so satisfying. It does take time and practice, but it is so worth the effort

Hi Kristin,

Thank you for your feedback. In looking for calligraphy guideline rulers I did see the 'Ames Lettering Guide', as well as 'InkMeThis Envelope Ruler' at John Neals store, but when using Google I came across the Aquino da Silva ruler and it seemed to be near perfect.

I create my own guidelines to print using GIMP, but I was looking for something easier to use than my protractor and ruler when I am not near a printer or want to create some lines quickly on the fly.

I'll continue to use what I have, but if I see the Aquino ruler come to the US I will update this thread.

Peace,
Catherine
