2017 goals & resolutions
« on: January 02, 2017, 04:16:42 PM »
New years resolutions anyone wants to share - flourish related or otherwise?
I've never set new years resolutions, but this year I've decided to go for it. At my company's holiday party I learned that only 2/50 cowokers had ever successfully completed a resolution, so I decided to make 7 easy-ish ones so that i'll keep at least one:
  • practice copperplate for 20mins 3x per week
  • read a book for at least 20mins 3x per week
  • write a personal letter 1x per week
  • go to the gym 1x per week (i usually work out at home and kids always interrupt me)
  • smell a candle while drinking tea 2x per week
  • with my family, write down one good thing that happened 1x per week
  • and of course... post on FF 3x per week

Hope you'll share some of your 2017 goals, thanks!
Kindest Regards,
Brad

These are terrific goals - thank you for sharing them with us! I particularly like #2, #5 and #6. And of course 7!

Last year I set completely unrealistic goals for myself and broke every one by January 3rd.  ;D But that's because they were all "don'ts." I like the "do's" list better!

I thought I wasn't really setting any for this year but this morning I mulled a few over.

1. Practice pointed pen 3-5x per week.
2. In the latter half of the year, start practicing broad pen again.
3. Yoga at the studio 4x per week (currently been doing that since September) and 2x per week at home.
4. Start meditating 10 minutes at least 3x per week.
5. Complete one of the 4 screenplays I am writing.
6. Be a conscious listener for my children and husband.
7. Continue to foster personal creative goals and update Flourish.  :)

I guess those are less resolutions and more goals but same idea.  :)

I don't usually have any personal objectives but ...

1) Get back to reasonable weight/fitness
2) Become comfortable with Spencerian, Italic and some kind of Uncial
3) Learn NT Greek / Read Codex Sinaiticus
4) Get my finances in order ...

There should probably be a few more but that seems like enough for now.

wow! you two are putting me to shame. Well while Robert's reading the Codex Sinaiticus and Erica's playing the cello, I'll be shopping for new candles and teas ;). actually, kids are in bed and copperplate practice is done for today so it's time for me to light a candle, brew some tea, and snuggle up with a book... I love new years resolutions!
Kindest Regards,
Brad

well 3 days completed in 2017 and I'm doing pretty darn good on my new years resolutions so far ;)
Erica, looks like you have a pretty exciting year planned -  I just did a delayed double take on your post "wait.. did Erica say she's working on 4 screenplays???". on top of all of that, don't you homeschool your kids too? That's pretty awesome.

come on folks there's gotta be some more 2017 goals out there right? Let's hear 'em. Just to inspire you, did you know that 2017 is a prime number?!?! That means it's indivisible - therefore, 2017 is a year of togetherness and unity. I can't make this stuff up. Besides it won't be until 2027 until the next prime number year - that's a long time.. where will you be in 2027???
Kindest Regards,
Brad

Erica, you are superwoman! The goals everyone has listed sound amazing. I've made more flexible resolutions as I am anticipating an insanely busy year on the work front. Perhaps not working so much should be one of those resolutions, but I know that is not going to happen. I need to keep it realistic and a bit forgiving in the timeline. That said, some of my goals are:

1) Be kinder to myself and less critical
2) Become more efficient with my time
3) Minimize the bad habits, particularly my sugar addiction
4) No matter how busy, maintain contact with family and friends
5) Practice broad pen more
6) Increase upper body strength and functional movements so I can conquer the monkey bars at Tough Mudder this year!

Most of my past resolutions have failed. Most of my goals have been unmet. The reasons are many--too many simultaneous attempts in various diverse areas, too vaguely stated or immeasurable , such that the goal has been technically met but little progress made; of course, laziness and lack of firm commitment, and so on. Putting out goals for the public to see does have some value though. In a small way, it makes one accountable to someone outside oneself.

So here's one for me:

To become a better penman in 2017.

Wait,wait--that is exactly the fuzzy goal that can be met with the smallest amount of time and effort , and thus would not be necessarily very satisfying even if met. Let's try again:

I will study and practise penmanship at least 800 hours in 2017.

Measurable, specific, doable(?). Let's see how that works in achieving my desire to become a better penman.

My goals this year include:

Learning Spencerian.   I have signed up for Harvest's online class which starts today.   I will not give up on it this year like I did last year.
Post more on FF
Practice Calligraphy every day for at least a half hour
Spend time on building my business every week
Be more accepting of myself and others
Be open to different experiences
Spend time daily on my spiritual life
Have fun

I never set goals or make resolutions. I don't like to plan my year ahead mostly because life is a beautiful journey with many unexpected adventures which sometimes require goals to shift.
My goal is to be a better person than I was a year before and to constantly learn new things. Sometimes this learning is picking up something new, sometimes is improving on what I already know. I find it easier to just go with the flow and set goals as opportunities arrive. The most important thing for me is to not let a year just go by while I look at life instead of living it.

But since I never wrote any New Year goals, I can't resist temptation to do it at least once :)
1. Continue practicing calligraphy
2. Start learning one broad edge script
3. Continue playing piano (and practice more regularly not just before performances)
4. Travel abroad at least once
5. When spring comes, find alternative to ice skating :)
6. Start meditating again
7. Become intermediate/advanced C++ programmer
8. I'll just stop there before this list becomes really unrealistic :)

@Erica McPhee :  Awesome!  If you need proof reading, PM me.

Writing is a challenge, but getting published, now that's something I'd like to make happen in 2017 !
(I have a completed novel sitting there, waiting patiently...)

And about that cello:   so cool!   Beautiful sound, but such a difficult instrument to learn!
So here's my wish for you:   learn the cello...............in a soundproof room   ;D (well,
I hope your calligraphy room is soundproof)    :D  :D  :D

Oh I just had to look this one up... Aw yes, mud!  We love mud!   :D   It looks similar to the Spartan Race (which I have yet to try myself).
Good luck with your resolutions!    Training both body and soul!

Wow! Erica will be having fun with the Cello! The techniques for western string instruments and chinese string instruments are very very similar. Well, goals for 2017- here is it!

1. Trying to master a concerto with the erhu before my recital in April.
2. Be more consistent with calligraphy practices with letter forms. I still have to draw slanted lines on a blank paper to make sure that I'm writing properly with a straight holder.
3. Perfecting my cupcake recipe and hope it doesn't taste like a rock anymore..
4. The 3 H s- Hippy, Healthy and Happy

Wishing all flourish forum members- Be Hippy, Healthy and Happy in 2017!!  :) :)

Oh, wow, Erica! All the best to you! :D This is so inspiring. :)

As for me, my goals would be:
1. Post a piece on IG every day (calligraphy or otherwise).
2. Attend Yoga classes at least 3x a week.
3. Be more mindful of what I eat!
4. Read at least two books a month.
5. Deliberate practice for calligraphy at least 30 mins a day.
6. Get back into conditioning exercises daily. :D
7. Have dinner with my best friends at least once a month (hahaha).
8. Read up on older hands (mainly broad edge scripts).
9. Start writing again. :)
