Tools & Supplies / Personal Address Stamps
« on: June 28, 2014, 09:25:10 AM »
Hi everyone!  I've been seeing some people have personalized stamps made, like the ones for return addresses. I was wondering who's the best supplier for this in the US and roughly how much, and how long before you get your stamps? Well, the cheaper the better hehe :)

I'll be in California in September and am thinking of ordering beforehand. Thanks in advance for your help! :)

Show & Tell / Text Logo - Vector
« on: February 22, 2014, 01:11:28 PM »
So this was my first attempt to vectorize calligraphy. Challenging, but happy to see my calligraphy not get jagged around the edges.

This is for an online seller Danica, "Alahera" means Jeweller in Filipino. She custom-makes jewelry. Was really nervous since she actually designs names and monograms!

Still trying to learn flourishings tho. Erica that h flourish was inspired by your paperwhite logo :)

Coffee & Nib-bles / Thank You from the Filipinas :)
« on: February 22, 2014, 12:48:06 PM »
Hi Everyone, I just wish to share our happiness of meeting fellow calligraphy enthusiasts today. When I joined the forum, I came here for the lack of resources I can get from the Philippines. I didn't know who to ask, where to buy, and what's available where we are. Through instagram, I was able to follow some Filipinas also doing calligraphy but I felt like the selfless way Erica is providing these resources drew us  closer to each other. Pretty soon, we already have added each other on Facebook, have our own group chat where we can discuss anything and everything calligraphy.

We started buying available resources when we can, shipping it to others who are in different locations. We gave information when the art stores replenished inks, when a certain nib suddenly becomes available. We were happy to share over-hoarded nibs and also asked each one for their personal orders when one would place an international PIA order.

Today, we were lucky to have met each other in person and tried out different nibs and inks. What joy! To this, we say thank you to Erica and the Flourish Forum community for inspiring us to pursue the love of letters and be supportive of each other. Sending happy faces from across the oceans:

Tools & Supplies / Archival Ink for Digital Printing?
« on: January 02, 2014, 04:55:04 AM »
Hi everyone. I've started to get some digital (with and without calligraphy) artworks ready for printing into wall art (8x10in max) lately, and just last week I printed one out from a Kodak shop. I blankly chose a matte finish and framed it, sold it to a friend.

The following day I realized I had not taken into consideration how long the print will last. I immediately Googled archival papers, printers and archival inks (HP Vivera and Epson Ultrachrome). I'm quite lost on which printers you can use these types of inks, and if at all affordable for a small home business.  Do you have recommendation for these?

Another angle I am looking at is--am I stressing too much about it? How do you print your digitized work for display? I think I have read that some use InkJet printers--will it not fade in, say, 10 years? I'm only concerned because I wouldn't want someone throw my work back at me after 3 years and complain that it faded--> money lost.

I can't remember how long ago I last printed on photo paper so I can't remember how long these prints last. Thanks for input!

Open Flourish | General Discussion / What's your workstation like?
« on: December 29, 2013, 12:49:13 AM »
Hi everyone, I'm thinking of setting up my workstation really soon and I'm trying to come up with inspiration. I currently work in a center table with floor pillows--not the most comfortable scene if you're doing hours of calligraphy--as I have not bought a worktable yet. My apartment is so small that I decided on going Japanese-style with my furniture a few years back.

Please post photos if you can :)

General How To's & Projects / How to make a DIY Lightbox?
« on: December 28, 2013, 06:42:10 AM »
Hi! I'm from the Philippines where calligraphy is just getting reborn, and as such, there are no lightboxes available in the local market. If I get it from Amazon, it's gonna be very expensive (customs and special handling). Anybody ever done their own lightbox? Mind if you share your tips, considerations or a how-to? :) LED? Thank you!

Introductions / Mabuhay! from Manila, Philippines
« on: December 28, 2013, 06:30:30 AM »
Hi, I'm Katia and I'm 27. I do not classify myself yet as a calligrapher because I only started late October.  :)

I grew up with a printing press as a family business and was exposed to good letter layout (typography). I did not, however, take up anything related to art/design in college, instead I studied tourism and became a flight attendant for a short while. Anyway, I used to doodle letterings when I am bored in class during middle/high school.

Last May, I [digitally] designed a modern wedding invitation for a good friend as a favor. Then in October, I was brainstorming ideas for another friend's wedding invite for April when I stumbled upon a Filipina calligrapher's page and I thought I should try it out since envelope addressing would go hand in hand with invitation designing. And now... I'm hooked.

I am so giddy because I just got my first customer today--only two months into the hobby--for envelope addressing for a wedding in Hawaii (couple is in NY, and are Filipinos)! I love how forums are still alive and is an avenue for great calligraphers like you to inspire and help :) Please, if I haven't followed you on instagram, let me know what your username is! (Mine is @thedesignhobbyist)

Okay, that wasn't a short introduction..  ;D

xoxo
Katia
