Day 7 - 2022: TRIP
« on: October 07, 2022, 12:42:03 AM »
I took @Lucie Y's suggestion to use a translation instead of the English word for today's word.  This in honor of my late parents and ancestors from Bohemia and to get practice on that rarely used capital "Z".  Sure, it's rarely used, but you better have it when you need it, right?

So, practicing with the Odyssey it is!

@Lucie Y - Fantastic roundhand!  so clean and sharp!
@Erica McPhee - What a beautiful flourished T.
@Zivio - this is really getting into the spirit of Inktober's interpretive flexibility!  Well done, both in execution and in interpretation!

And also... today's prompt is a good lesson in how translation is a land of pitfalls and mirages.  The French translation as "voyage" only corresponds to one sense of "trip" -- a trip as a journey.  But one could also construe "trip" as a stumble.  Or as @AnasaziWrites brilliantly illustrates, "trip" as a psychedelic experience.

Well done, everyone!  Mine is plain and boring in comparison.

Wonderful everyone! I really enjoy seeing everyone’s work.

Today I worked on flourishing some of the words I wrote out yesterday. It’s going fair. I consider it a practice page. I am learning a lot from doing it. That by itself is valuable. I find myself spending time trying to make something beautiful out of a series of unintended mistakes: blobs, smudges, not so graceful curves, etc. Also a learning experience.

I’ll try to finish the page and post it on another day. In the meantime, I’m also looking at plenty  modern and historic examples by accomplished pen wielders.

Today I also played with some soluble graphite products, as well as ink, on a journal page. And some metallic pencils (pink and blue), jumping off the word for today. Sometimes I don’t bother removing the penciled-in guidelines. Both are below.

No, my friend, your evocation of trip across the hot searing desert is brilliant. I am humbled into silence.

Aww shucks, @AnasaziWrites - You're too kind, Mike.  I have a thing for camels, and was happy to have a reason to do a sketch with them again this year, although I only had the time for a wash & silhouette drawing.  It reminded me of the last camel sketch I did - for Inktober 2019.  28 Oct 2019: "Ride" (sort of like "Trip")

Your camels are a delight to behold! And anyone with a thing for camels must read Skeletons on the Zaraha by Dean King, based on a Captain Riley's memoir and harrowing story of shipwreck on the coast of Africa in 1815 and having been taken as slaves by nomads. Said memoir was purportedly Abraham Lincoln's favorite book.  At one point, Captain Riley tells of his fall from a camel, and being told he was okay because "camels are sacred and those who fall from them are never hurt."  When doing research for the book, author Dean King also fell from a galloping camel and was told the same thing by his guide ... in 2001.

@Zivio Thanks.  Just nature doing its part after I plant and water.  I'm all for the fruit.  The flowers are for the misses.
@Erica McPhee @AnasaziWrites Thanks  I am sure your garden has plenty of exotic flowers too.
