Guidelines for envelopes?
« on: April 16, 2017, 12:05:05 PM »
Hello lovely calligraphers!

I joined Flourish Forum mostly to learn more about calligraphy in anticipation of addressing my save the date and invitation envelopes. One of my stumbling points is now figuring out the scale of the letters- I've purchased a few guideline templates from the Postman's Knock (where I started my calligraphy journey) and have been using a Lettermate but every time I complete a practice A7 envelope, my text seems SO LARGE in comparison to what I've seen here and on Youtube and Instagram!

Does anyone have suggestions or links to existing guideline templates? Any advice is helpful!

Thank you!

Sure.
type the word guidelines into the search box at the top right of the page and you will get all sorts of posts that discuss guidelines and links to guideline generators.

I make my own lines/rules with either a rolling ruler (and white/light, easily-erased pencil) or use a laser level from Home Depot – Black & Decker has one for $14

Hope that's helpful!

I would get a piece of paper, then cut it to your envelope size, and experiment.
Try different heights for the address and return address, till you feel comfortable with a particular height.
For me, it is really what the finished product looks like.  I don't really care that what I do may not match what I see on the internet, because everyone has their own opinion.  It has to look good and balanced to ME, or in your case to YOU.
Example, the standard guidelines may use a 4 or 5mm spacing, but you may find that you like a 4.5mm spacing.  So use a 4.5mm spacing.
And don't be afraid of using different heights, I use one height for the return address and a larger height for the recipients address.
I have also seen several envelopes where the recipients name on the address is taller than the rest of the address, and it looked good.

Tip:  Keep a set of alternate recipients guideline in your pocket
- For people with LONG names, where you have to write smaller than usual to fit their name in the space you have.
- Or where you may have to put their names on 2 lines.

The problem that I have is I do not have the experience and only seeing but a small fraction of what you experienced people do and see.
So I tend to be more self limiting simply because I don't know the other options out there.

That is what happens when one has too many hobbies, each fighting for time.   :-\

Well, I'm not that experienced with writing envelopes either.
Enjoy all your hobbies  :D

The Alvin No. 312 12" rolling parallel ruler works well for me.

Perhaps this can be used to 'invisibly' rule your envelopes?
