Title: Spencerian Signatures We Like
Post by: AnasaziWrites on August 07, 2016, 02:55:22 PM
If there is a Spencerian signature you like, feel free to try your hand at it and post it here.

This is a (poor) copy of a Courtney signature from Michael Sull's Spencerian Script and Ornamental Penmanship, Vol. 2, p. 428. Nice balance between bold shades and delicate letters.

Found the original on ebay. I suspect it's from the Business Educator but I'm not sure who penned it. Whole arm movement is no joke!

Very nice, himasf, well done.

You mention you have the original. Is it on a card or is it printed, as if a clip from Business Educator or some publication?

Also, you mention you got it from someone on eBay. Was it Madocs by chance?

oh no, i don't have the original. but yes, it's a listing by Madocs that i screencapped on my phone. i don't own any golden age specimen/clippings. i wish!

Aha. A little background.
That specimen was almost certainly part of the Lupfer collection. When Lupfer died in 1974, he left behind a collection of about 50 years of specimens, most of which appeared in The Business Educator, of which Lupfer was editor and contributor for many years. His widow sold the collection to Del Tysdal (who, sadly, died in 2013) for, I believe $5000. It filled three vans. Del was selling parts of this collection in the early 2000's on eBay, where Madocs (Aidan Meehan, a talented Celtic design calligrapher and author) bought that specimen and many others (I bought a few myself), which he is now selling.  Now they are rarely offered, except for Madocs. If you are interested in originals, I would encourage you to buy at least a few. Originals are simply finer than any reproductions.

 :o :o :o

Thanks for the info. I've wondered all this time who this madocs fella was.
Yeah, I'm not that interested in clippings/reproductions but I don't know how to get originals
without breaking into @schin 's house.  ;D

Even a small scrap from madocs is enough.. you can see in person how fine the lettering is.

Looks great @Raayynuh. I wish I could attend the Saga too, but teachers only get the summer off for calligraphy camp fun. I will have to live vicariously through you.

Here is my Bloser. I haven't really wrote much OP, or Spence this summer. I have be focusing on Italian hand since June.

This is an attempt at an early version of Lupfer's signature (c. 1912). I really like the construction of it and the balance. Some his later signatures are even more complex and difficult to write well, but very attractive. His off hand work was superb.

Hi @himasf
To answer your question it's everything from beginning. I am totally new to spencerian and wish to start learning. Right now I'm practising copperplate but parallely want to start this.

Thanks for asking and hope to get some guidance from you all.

Nicely done. You've captured well the "spirit" of the signature.
Is that graph paper 8 squares to the inch (thus, x-height of 1/8 inch)?
Are the large loops done off hand, ie. whole arm?

Yes, 8x1" grid. Whole arm. I haven't spent time learning off-hand yet. @AnasaziWrites

I always write too big. What size are you using?
Title: Re: Spencerian Signatures We Like

Thats really nice @AmyNeub. One question do you have a rough scribble with pen or pencil before you do you final render.

Hello @ash0kgiri. I usually trace the signatures a few times with pencil, then pen and ink to understand the structure and steps. Then I just free write and practice a million times.

Very nice, Ashok. I'm a big Kelchner fan. In Michael Sull's opinion, "one of the finest all-around penmen who ever took pen to ink."
Where did you see the original?

@AmyNeub
Size? Using the E. A. Lupfer signature for example, I practised on lined paper, no guidelines, and the x-height turned out to be 2 mm or a little smaller. The E, however, turned out about ten times that big.

1/8th inch is not too big. That was the size Lupfer  often used when he submitted signatures to be published in the Business Educator.

Very nicely done.
I recognize this from Sull's book, p. 515. One of my favorites as well.
(For those not familiar with it, this is an envelope penned by Mervin A. Albin and sent to Lupfer in 1932)

yup, the original on that page by Albin is awesome. That whole page has good muscle movement.
For some reason I tend to think the name written in specimen is the name of the person who wrote it but clearly this was an addressed envelope and could not have been Lupfer himself.

Hi @himasf

One question on the grip of the pen and its a straight holder. Is this how you are supposed to hold it when writing Ornamental script or lot of flourishing and why not an oblique holder? Sorry if they sound silly :(

-Ashok
Title: Re: Spencerian Signatures We Like
Post by: himasf on October 06, 2016, 04:41:24 AM
This grip is for offhand flourishing. It can be done with an oblique & regular grip too but you'd have to draw the letters in reverse for the shades to land in the right places.

Hi @himasf

-Ashok
Flourishing hand simply means holding the pen in such a way that the shades are made when the pen is moving away from you, as opposed to making the shades while pulling the pen towards you (which is the way most people write). Traditionally, flourishes were made with a straight pen, but you could use an oblique pen if it suits you.
The result of this hand is that the shades appear on the "opposite" parts of the letters. As you see from this page from Spencerian Script and Ornamental Penmanship by Michael Sull, both majuscules and miniscules can be made with this hand, "reversing" the shades.
Flourishing hand can be imitated also by drawing the letters in monoline first and then adding the shades or, as himasf mentions, drawing the letters backwards (ie. from the traditional end to the traditional begining).

I used a Gillott 604ef (my nib of preference these days). I could have gotten larger shades, which would have better matched the original, if I had pressed harder, but controlled my inner Lupfer in this case.
I like the G303 as well (the earliest version). Super for copperplate/engrossing.
