Just got my first post card from the exchange! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Michael from List 6!!!! Your post card is so beautiful. I'm fairly new at calligraphy and I hope someday to be able to control the pointed pen enough to make consistent upstokes. I'm not even sure if I'm using the right verbiage.  ??? I just know that it's beautiful. Thank you again.  :)

At the nibs and ink blog, be sure to go to the Labels on the right side, and click on [flourishing]
Then, you have to scroll down and start with the first post, at the bottom.
There are lots of tips  - but I will mention the one that I think is the most important....
Don't try to learn all of them at once.
There is a fluidity to flourishing that only comes with practice and spending time making the motions with your whole arm
and not just wiggling your fingers.
Making tight little corkscrews or pigtails are  OK if you want a very quirky, naive style. But, if your goal is to have flourishing that is elegant, you will do better with larger, loopy, ovals that compliment the ovals and angles in the particular style you are writing.

I have about 50 more exemplars to post ....and hope to get them posted one of these days.....
I will post to the forum when I get around to it.

Jean, Thanks so much for your post on flourishing. I've just recently started using the pointed pen and I've been struggling with flourishes. Your two tips on using my whole arm and remembering to breath ( ;) ) have made such a HUGE difference.

Can't wait to see you other exemplars. Thanks again!

Hi all. Just signed up for my very first exchange. I'm a newbie at calligraphy and we just recently moved here to the central valley in California. Nervous and excited to learn and share about 2 new things in my life. Can't wait to learn a bit about some of you!

I'm enjoying reading all the encouraging and positive comment from all over the world!

Hi All. I'm Kartini and I'm super excited to be here.

I have never been part of any forum before. So I'm also a little nervous about how to navigate, reply, and contributing. But, really, really excited about it.

My calligraphy journey is fairly new. But I've always loved writing words. I can remember in high school I use to write random words on everything. In church on the bulletin, down the margin of my homework, any time I had paper and a pen. I loved writing letters and addressing all the Christmas card.(and it hasn't changed much since then. ;))

I've always wanted to learn calligraphy since forever, and finally took that first step. I just finished my first on-line calligraphy class from Melissa Esplin at istilllovecalligraphy.com, and have found I LOVE the pointed pen!!!!

I don't know very much about calligraphy and the different styles. I am excited about learning. Thanks for letting me be part of this forum. Can't wait to get started!
