Learning Off-hand Flourishing - Hoang Video

I found this very helpful and detailed video to learn Off-hand Flourishing made by Calligraphy by Hoang. I like that he shows the grip up close and he shows how to do the individual strokes with a pencil first. This is a GREAT video!

I took two classes with Hoang this last week and he's an excellent teacher. He's very detailed and manages to cover so much in the time that he has and pays individual attention to each one of us. If you have the chance, take a class with Hoang.

Okay, who went out and bought Lupfer's book? I did, and it arrived yesterday. I had just gotten home at 1:30, from a very late night out, and instead of heading off to bed, I sat at my desk and read the book! It's wonderful. I've been doing Hoang's practices at work, and I'm trying to decide whether to be good and continue practicing with a pencil (I can already feel things getting more natural), or jump ahead and start doing it with pen and ink. I think I'll try to do a few more days of pencil flourishes, and maybe graduate to pen-and-ink next weekend.

(I have a Really Big Thing to prepare for on Friday, and I don't want to get caught up in a new project before then.)

I've had the Lupfer book for a while, and it is indeed wonderful.

Whether I like the bird flourishing genre is another matter - for the most part I don't, but Blanchard's hummingbirds are an exception.

I love that book, and have been using this specific grip for flourishing ever since I came across it

It's also encouraging that his strokes aren't all perfectly equal; makes me feel a little more comfortable with my own imperfect practice sessions.
I'm not much of a fan of practising with pencil though - I personally prefer all of my practise to include the feel of the pen and changing of pressure. While it makes things a little harder at first (more to pay attention to at once), for me it makes for much better progress. To each his own, I guess
