2023 Exchanges / Re: Exchange Share

Thanks all! I have to say - the word salad was some of my favorite exchanges I have received! You all were so clever and it was fun to see the different interpretations. It was also fun to see calligraphy and vegetables mixed together.  ;D It can be difficult to push ourselves creatively but everyone did!

I know this is old but somehow I missed it. Thank you @Mary_M for sharing this! I am going to look into it. It sounds fascinating!

@Chessie Absolutely brilliant advice! I completely agree with the pedantic essence. Your advice is spot on.

@Zivio - I LOVE this “triangulate” method. Fabulous advice! And I have also experienced that jolt experience when learning and it is just the best because that pause is the best kind of moments. The philosopher and eternal student in me LOVES this.  :)

2023 Exchanges / Exchange Share

These were from the Peaceful Calligrapher Exchange and the Word Salad exchange. So loved the different takes people sent on both these exchanges!

I decided to do originals for the Peaceful calligrapher exchange. I did a few strips of the beach scene and then cut them out using a circle cutter. (I also used this for a birthday card for a friend.) Doing originals really helps improve your composition skills and calligraphy skills - versus just practicing.

The Word Salad I used ChatGPT AI to generate a phrase. Some of them were hilarious but this was the best one. I made a clear hanging bowl of Word Salad.

Feel free to share yours!

I like that cabinet @Zivio ! And @AnasaziWrites - looks like the office of one of the masters of the past!  :)

LOLOL! It’s a tricky one.   ;D

I LOVE this post so much! This to me is what discovering calligraphy is all about - finding the love of letters in whatever form. I was so saddened when I started meeting more people in the calligraphy community who disparaged the Italic books I had learned from as a young eager child. I understand we can only be as good as what we learn from. But back in the 80’s there were only a handful of books available and none of the ones I could access were apparently “good.” But I thought they were beautiful and I am grateful for every one.

Like that gouache video I made. LOL. I absolutely cringe when I see it because it is so poorly done. BUT - look at that - it helped @JanisTX learn to use gouache! So mission accomplished!  ;D

Thank you Janis for this terrific encouragement.

P.S. I am right there with you, my handwriting and calligraphy battle each other.  ;D

I forgot to mention @jordantruster ’s Spencerian ProCreate class is fantastic. It is so thoughtful and so well planned out. The worksheets are fabulous. It is a GREAT way to learn Spencerian.

This is the funniest post I have read in a LONG time!  ;D

I’m not one for experimenting much with inks. I stick to the ones that have worked for me (which is good and bad). You’ve mentioned a couple I must try now.

I learned early on to steer clear of Speedball India Ink. I have had many a Parallel Pen ink that bleeds. It’s more like Fountain Pen Ink. Which is really interesting… don’t know what kind of paper they think we are writing on with fountain pen ink but it definitely bleeds.

I tried making my own Walnut Ink out of crystals once … once. It was a mess! And I never got the consistency right. So I stick to my Norton’s Walnut Drawing Ink.

Thanks for giving me a good laugh!  ;D

@Cyril Jayant That’s so exciting! Definitely check out the free tutorials on Every Tuesday. So much to learn there. I am also taking the Ultimate ProCreate Course. I haven’t made it through yet but there is a lot. You can also find a ton of free tutorials on YouTube.

Have fun! Hope you’ll share what you do after some practice!  :)
