Hi, I'm Maria from Jakarta, Indonesia

I'm a graphic designer and in the past year I've been looking for something apart from constantly working with the computer.. so I revisited hand-lettering few months back. I found Calligraphy along the way, and luckily a workshop to start learning it in town two weeks ago. Currently have a holder with a Nikko G nib. So yes, I'm still a baby in calligraphy

Getting supplies is quite a challenge as mentioned by one of the few calligraphers in Jakarta - ernie_tan Instagram has been a huge help so far, and it's great to find this forum. I used to have pen pals during my school years so I'm also looking forward to exchange letters with fellow calligraphers!

Looking forward to learn more from the forum and also connecting with calligraphers around the world!

I'm a calligraphy baby too 

I hear you on the challenge of finding supplies. But actually the hardest things would be holder and nibs. You can improvise on others - I use drink glasses, takeaway sauce containers, medicine/ nail art organiser boxes (haha) etc to hold ink, pens, nibs. You know in Indo it seems all takeaway food comes with a tiny ziplock bag to hold chili. That would be so good to organise your nibs  I buy printer paper by ream to save on $ and print my own guidelines. Hmm for ink, Im experimenting with whatever is labeled as Chinese/ sumi ink/ manga/ drawing inks - these are more available in Indo/ SG I think. Cheap watercolors are also really fun to use

Yes, at the stationery store nibs are limited to manga drawing nibs here, and one type of straight holder that comes with it.
Some people are selling inks and nibs on instagram, but they still come with a price since they imported it from overseas themselves i guess.

I use ink containers I got from the workshop I attended, and I use small takeaway sauce containers too! Too bad they're not ideal for traveling because they leak. I use Daiso calligraphy ink - it's affordable and smells better than Chinese ink that we have here

I thought places like Artfriend in Singapore has more calligraphy supplies? btw, I've followed you on IG - thanks for the tips and see you around!
