Hello, dear friends!
« on: July 20, 2015, 08:53:14 PM »
First, I have to say I love the amount of formatting options for text on the forum. Makes total sense!  :D

Hi, all! My name is Tina and I have only just recently taken my calligraphy hobby beyond friends and family and started a humble little paperie called dear. I love, love, LOVE paper. I have always been a voracious reader, but I was also very interested in the paper of my books--the texture, the weight, the way the ink looked--the "feel" of the paper. From a very young age, I was also overly preoccupied with my signature: I wanted it to look like a clever trademark, and less like an example of good penmanship. Combine these two things and of course I would come to learn calligraphy! With lessons another addition came--rhythm! I loved the way calligraphy was like a dance.
I picked it up again recently as part of my job with a large scale paperie teaching paper arts, which I love, of course! I'm also a bookbinder, I studied branding and logo design, am an editor professionally, and am a big fine paper and typography nerd. I like to combine handmade paper with the old school marbling process, and then apply calligraphy. All of which are a big part of dear. Hello! Thank you for having me--I have so much to catch up on--and learn!

Hello and welcome, Tina!

It's lovely how an interest in all things paper naturally leads to calligraphy :-)

thank you, ladies! I imagine for you all it was inevitable, too? It is nice to recognize some instagram names! :)

I just got my very first oblique pen in the mail today! I've given it a spin already and can't even believe it. my curves are so much better already just trying it out! I've also gotten a number of nibs to fit and, well, it kind of feels like christmas! Any advice or tips? Favorite nibs?

Hi Tina! Welcome :) I love paper too - dabbled in some paper making in school and always wish I had done more. Looking forward to seeing your work and getting to know you!

I am completely jealous--I love paper, too, but have not taken it to your level (but would secretly love to do so)!  Like you, I've always loved the paper in books and how it felt (have you ever noticed that old books have a different smell from new books?).  My friends have always found this a little odd, so I usually keep it to myself.  :)
